Unforgettable Tulum Girls Trip: A Pre-Pandemic Escape to Paradise

In these times, a virtual escape often feels like a necessity, which is why I’m thrilled to finally share the vibrant details of my Tulum girls trip. This unforgettable adventure unfolded with my dear friends, Gina and Brandy, last February, unknowingly becoming our cherished last international escapade for quite some time. It was a trip that perfectly encapsulated the magic of discovery, relaxation, and friendship, all just before the world dramatically shifted with the explosion of COVID-19 into a global pandemic. While the journey home presented its own set of challenges, the memories forged in the sun-drenched beauty of Tulum remain exceptionally vivid and treasured.

Our tradition has always been to prioritize connection, making it a point to visit each other two or three times annually. Among these reunions, at least one or two inevitably involve a destination trip, whether it’s exploring a new city domestically or venturing further afield internationally. For this particular trip, we truly didn’t realize how significant it would become—not just as a fantastic getaway, but as a poignant bookmark in our travel diaries.

The return journey, however, was a stark contrast to the idyllic days we had just experienced. It transformed into a logistical nightmare that left me utterly exhausted and emotional. I vividly recall sitting on the tarmac at Cancún airport, tears streaming down my face as I spoke to Aaron on the phone. After more than eight grueling hours at the airport, with the real possibility of being stranded overnight if our flight couldn’t depart before the crew’s overtime limits were reached, all I desired was to be home. Adding to the stress, Aaron had fallen ill with what, in retrospect, we are now certain was COVID-19, given the symptoms. My sole wish was to be reunited with him, offering comfort and support. This challenging conclusion, however, cannot diminish the sheer joy and beauty of the days that preceded it.

The Allure of Tulum: Why We Chose This Mexican Gem

Tulum has steadily risen to prominence as a top travel destination, celebrated for its unique blend of ancient Mayan history, breathtaking Caribbean beaches, bohemian charm, and world-class culinary scene. For a girls’ trip, it offers an irresistible combination: opportunities for relaxation, adventure, exquisite dining, and vibrant cultural immersion. The promise of swaying palm trees, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and an effortlessly chic atmosphere made Tulum the undeniable choice for our getaway. It promised a sanctuary where we could unwind, reconnect, and create lasting memories before the world plunged into uncertainty.

A Serene Sanctuary: Our Stay at Mi Amor Tulum

Until we can again embark on international adventures, I hope these cherished photos and recollections transport you to the tranquil shores of Tulum. Our chosen accommodation, a boutique hotel named Mi Amor, nestled right on the captivating coastline of Tulum, was an absolute dream. What we didn’t initially realize, but quickly came to appreciate, was that Mi Amor is designed as a couples resort and is strictly adult-only. Honestly, this discovery solidified my future vacation preferences. The atmosphere was incredibly serene, profoundly peaceful, and utterly dreamy. It was the kind of escape where every detail felt curated for ultimate relaxation.

Discovering Mi Amor: An Adult-Only Oasis

I’ve already told Aaron that a return trip to Mi Amor together is absolutely essential. The intimate scale of the resort, with its limited capacity, truly made it feel like our own private destination. We cherished the daily ritual of securing one of the coveted cabanas perched along the dramatic cliffs overlooking the ocean. Setting up camp there for the entire day, we indulged in endless hours of reading, chatting, swimming, and simply soaking in the mesmerizing views. This tranquil routine made it one of the most relaxing vacations I’ve ever experienced—a sweet irony, given it unfolded just before the chaos of a global pandemic. The gentle sound of the waves, the soft sea breeze, and the attentive service created an unparalleled sense of calm that we often yearn for in our busy lives.

As these images clearly convey, the architecture of the hotel and the panoramic views it offered were nothing short of incredible. We were incredibly fortunate to have been blessed with the most gorgeous weather throughout our stay, enhancing every moment spent by the pool or on the beach. The vivid blue of the sky seamlessly merged with the turquoise hues of the Caribbean Sea, creating a postcard-perfect backdrop for our unforgettable retreat. Each morning brought clear skies and warm sunshine, setting the perfect tone for days filled with relaxation and exploration. It felt like we had stumbled upon a hidden paradise, a place where worries simply melted away with the tide.

Waking Up to Paradise: Breakfast and Views at Mi Amor

Our mornings at Mi Amor always began with a delightful breakfast served at the hotel’s restaurant, often accompanied by the same comforting and delicious choices. Their chilaquiles with a rich red sauce, perfectly topped with a fried egg, quickly became my go-to dish—a flavorful and hearty start to each day. Every meal and drink we enjoyed at the hotel consistently exceeded expectations; the quality and freshness were truly outstanding. One morning, we opted for smoothies, and they were so incredibly fresh and vibrant, a testament to the local ingredients and meticulous preparation. Dining with the gentle sea breeze and stunning ocean vistas as our backdrop made every breakfast an experience to savor, truly enhancing the sense of a luxurious escape.

A Culinary Journey Through Tulum: From Fine Dining to Street Tacos

Tulum’s culinary landscape is as diverse as it is delicious, offering everything from healthy, plant-based fare to upscale jungle dining and, of course, the quintessential Mexican street food experience. Our girls’ trip became an exploration of these varied flavors, each meal adding another layer to our appreciation of this vibrant destination.

Nourishing Delights at The Real Coconut Kitchen

One of our most exciting culinary discoveries was The Real Coconut Kitchen, a true gem located on Tulum’s bustling main strip. This restaurant immediately captured our attention with its unique philosophy: it’s entirely plant-focused, 100% gluten-free, and completely free of grains and dairy. Every dish we sampled there was not only incredibly delicious but also made us feel remarkably healthy and energized. The food was consistently fresh, vibrant, and bursting with natural flavors, proving that healthy eating can also be an indulgent experience. It’s an absolute must-visit for anyone seeking wholesome, conscious dining options in Tulum, or simply looking to enjoy incredibly tasty and innovative plant-based cuisine.

An Unforgettable Evening at Kitchen Table Tulum

For a more upscale and immersive dining experience, we chose Kitchen Table, a restaurant renowned for its innovative menu and enchanting ambiance. The moment we approached its entrance, it felt as though we were stepping into a mystical jungle, setting the tone for an extraordinary evening. The restaurant itself features a captivating open kitchen, and we were fortunate enough to secure seats right in front of it. Watching the chefs meticulously prepare each dish, with their movements so synchronized and precise, was like witnessing a culinary ballet. The entire operation was incredibly well-orchestrated, turning dinner into a theatrical and highly engaging experience. The focus on fresh, local ingredients and the artistry of the cooking made it a truly memorable meal, offering a sophisticated contrast to the rustic charm of other dining spots.

Authentic Local Flavors: Antojitos Chiapaneca

No trip to Mexico is complete without indulging in authentic street tacos, and Tulum delivered spectacularly on this front. For an experience that promises the true taste of local flavor, do yourself a favor: hop in a taxi and ask to be taken to Antojitos Chiapaneca. This humble, roadside taco joint is practically legendary among locals, and for very good reason. They serve up what I can confidently say are the absolute best tacos al pastor I have ever had. The succulent, spit-roasted pork, carved directly onto warm tortillas and garnished with fresh pineapple, cilantro, and onions, is pure perfection. And here’s the kicker – they’re an unbelievable 50 cents a piece! I’m not ashamed to admit I ordered three rounds. This is a culinary experience that’s not to be missed for any true taco enthusiast visiting Tulum.

Diving into Tulum’s Natural Wonders: The Mystical Cenotes

After we had our fill of the most incredible tacos, our adventure continued to one of Tulum’s most iconic natural attractions: the cenotes. While they are undeniably popular and can be quite “touristy,” the experience of exploring these unique geological formations is still one of the coolest and most memorable things I’ve ever done.

An Unforgettable Subterranean Adventure

Cenotes are natural sinkholes, sacred to the ancient Mayans, and act as gateways to vast underground river systems. What makes them so extraordinary is the opportunity to literally swim into these ancient caves. It’s an ethereal experience, with stalactites hanging from the ceilings and crystal-clear freshwater inviting you into its cool embrace. A word of caution: if you’re prone to claustrophobia, this might be a challenge. There are moments when you find yourself navigating through tight spaces, and even I, not typically claustrophobic, felt a touch of unease at times. However, the sheer beauty and uniqueness of the environment are incredibly rewarding. Visitors are typically provided with life jackets for safety and snorkels to fully appreciate the mesmerizing underwater world, revealing how incredibly deep and pristine some of these subterranean pools truly are. The play of light filtering through openings in the cave ceiling, illuminating the clear water, creates a magical, almost otherworldly ambiance.

Capturing the Magic: GoPro Regrets and Recommendations

This part of the trip came with a significant lesson learned. If you own a GoPro, or any waterproof action camera, absolutely, unequivocally TAKE IT WITH YOU to the cenotes! My oversight was believing we weren’t actually going to visit the cenotes that day. Our initial plan was simply to head into town for the famous tacos. It was our charismatic taxi driver who convinced us, quite persuasively, to make an impromptu stop at a cenote on the way back. While I’m eternally grateful for his recommendation, my GoPro was back in the hotel room, a decision I instantly regretted. I was so bummed to miss out on capturing the incredible underwater visuals and the stunning cave formations. So, learn from my mistake: always be prepared, especially in a place like Tulum where spontaneous adventures are the norm. Having a good waterproof camera will allow you to immortalize the stunning beauty of these natural wonders and revisit those magical moments for years to come.

The Journey Home: A Reality Check and Future Hopes

As much as I loved every moment of our Tulum girls trip, the journey home served as a stark, somewhat brutal, reminder of the global situation unfolding. The return trip became an ordeal, particularly at Cancún airport. What began as a standard departure turned into an agonizing wait of over eight hours on the tarmac, with the constant threat of our flight being canceled and a potential overnight stay at the airport looming if staff exceeded their legal work hours. The anxiety was palpable, and I remember feeling utterly drained, longing for the comfort of home. Compounding this stress was the knowledge that Aaron had fallen ill during my trip with symptoms that, in hindsight, were unequivocally consistent with early COVID-19. This personal worry intertwined with the public health crisis made the desire to simply be home and with him overwhelming.

Reflecting on this trip, it holds a particularly poignant place in my heart as it was, unknowingly, our last international adventure for a considerable period. The subsequent months brought an unprecedented halt to global travel, transforming our perception of freedom and spontaneity. This Tulum getaway, therefore, wasn’t just another vacation; it became a cherished symbol of a time when travel was less complicated and the world felt more open. Despite the challenging conclusion, the beauty of Tulum, the laughter shared with Gina and Brandy, and the unforgettable experiences we had will forever shine brighter. I eagerly anticipate the day when international travel becomes a seamless joy once more, and I look forward with immense hope to returning to the serene embrace of Mi Amor with Aaron, recreating a slice of that paradise. Tulum remains a truly magical destination, one that offers an escape for the soul, and I wholeheartedly encourage anyone seeking beauty, adventure, and tranquility to experience its wonders.
