Discover Charleston, SC: An Unforgettable Journey Through Southern Charm and Culinary Delights
September was a whirlwind of travel adventures, starting with a serene escape to the Hudson River Valley, followed by an incredible week immersed in the vibrant culture and flavors of Charleston, South Carolina. For the initial part of my visit, I had the immense pleasure of staying with my dear friend, Caroline, and her wonderful family. Her delightful boys, Liam and Hayden, were incredibly sweet, and I cherished every moment spent with them. I truly felt like an honorary member of their family, thanks to Caroline and her husband, Logan, who were the most gracious hosts. They were fantastic sports, even embracing their role as “tour guides” in their hometown, showing me the very best of Charleston.
Having never visited Charleston before, their local insights into the must-try restaurants and hidden gems were invaluable. I am endlessly grateful for their guidance and the delicious memories we created. Though it was sad to bid them farewell, revisiting these photographs brings back the warmth and joy of that trip. I sincerely hope this comprehensive guide will assist you in planning your own unforgettable adventure to Charleston, SC. My next visit will definitely include my husband, Jason, as there are still so many more culinary experiences I’m eager to explore, and several places I’m longing to return to.
The latter half of my week was dedicated to an enriching photography workshop hosted by the exceptionally talented Helene Dujardin. As a self-taught photographer, this was my first workshop experience, and I approached it with an open mind, eager to learn. The investment proved to be incredibly worthwhile. I gained a wealth of knowledge not only from Helene herself, who possesses a truly big heart for teaching, but also from connecting with other passionate photographers in the industry. The sessions deepened my understanding of light manipulation, shadow play, compelling composition, and the art of styling. I wholeheartedly recommend attending one of her future workshops if you have the opportunity; it’s an experience that will undoubtedly elevate your craft.
Prepare to be inspired and perhaps a little hungry, as this post unfolds the magic and flavors of Charleston, SC! I hope it sparks a yearning for your next Southern escape. 🙂

Charleston’s Essential Culinary Experiences: A Foodie’s Paradise
My first culinary stop after Caroline picked me up from the airport was the legendary Hominy Grill. I had heard tales of its perpetually long queues, and with my stomach rumbling, I was bracing myself for a significant wait. To my pleasant surprise, we were seated immediately! Arriving at an off-peak hour certainly played in our favor, allowing me to dive straight into the experience I was so excited for.

Caroline’s friend insisted we try the pumpkin gingerbread, and I am eternally grateful for that recommendation! This seasonal delight arrived perfectly toasted, warm, and incredibly soft. Each bite was an embrace of autumn flavors, a comforting preview of Fall even though it was still September.

Of course, a visit to the South demands a classic Southern dish, and I couldn’t resist the shrimp and grits. It was absolutely fantastic—one of the best I’ve ever tasted, perfectly creamy with plump, flavorful shrimp.

Sweet Indulgences: Persimmon Cafe and BeardCat’s
After a satisfying meal, we drove over to Persimmon Cafe, a truly unique spot nestled inside a laundromat. This charming cafe offers an array of coffee and delightful custards, making laundry day a much sweeter affair.

A definite must-try is their Nutella and toasted marshmallow custard, where they perfectly toast the marshmallows right before your eyes! The visual appeal alone is almost as good as the taste.

I opted for the Chai Dolce, and if you’re a chai tea lover, you absolutely must try this custard. It tastes remarkably similar to a perfectly spiced chai tea, served in a creamy, frozen form.

Exploring Historic Charleston: Beyond the Plate
My time in Charleston was blessed with absolutely stunning weather. Just gaze at the expansive blue sky and fluffy white clouds in these photos – perfect for exploring this picturesque city.

One place I was particularly eager to visit was Boone Hall Plantation, captivated by the numerous stunning photographs I’d seen of its magnificent Avenue of Oaks. This breathtaking canopy of Spanish moss-draped live oaks truly is a sight to behold. Typically, there’s a parking fee, around $20, but we lucked out! A Scottish festival was underway, granting us free entry and an unexpected bonus of lively entertainment.

Dinner by the Coast: The Obstinate Daughter in Isle of Palms
For dinner one evening, we ventured to The Obstinate Daughter in Isle of Palms, and every aspect of the experience was delightful. The interior boasts a charming nautical theme, creating a relaxed yet sophisticated ambiance, and their menu is simply superb. This place gets incredibly busy, so making reservations is highly recommended to secure your spot.

We started with fried okra, perfectly crispy and accompanied by an incredible dipping sauce. The exact ingredients escape me now, but I distinctly remember it being an absolute favorite!

And then there were the polenta fries—oh, yes! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, a truly satisfying appetizer.

Deciding on a main course was a delightful challenge, but I finally settled on the peach pizza. It featured speck, gorgonzola (seriously, throw blue cheese on any menu item, and I’m instantly sold!), balsamic glaze, and fresh peaches. The combination was divine and unexpectedly harmonious.

Directly beneath The Obstinate Daughter, you’ll find BeardCat’s, a charming sweet shop specializing in authentic gelato.

It was endearing to watch sweet little Liam carefully choose his gelato flavors—a true highlight of the evening.

Caroline’s carrot cake gelato flavor was a revelation; it featured genuine chunks of carrot cake embedded within the creamy gelato. And seriously, the waffle cones at BeardCat’s are exceptional—super light, incredibly crispy, unlike any other waffle cone I’ve ever had.

Quintessential Southern Breakfast: Biscuits, Donuts & Coffee
The following morning, our mission was to seek out Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit in downtown Charleston. I must warn you, this place is literally a tiny “hole in the wall.” We walked past it twice before finally spotting its discreet storefront! Thankfully, we eventually found it and were overjoyed to step inside.

Typically, there’s a line snaking out the door, but we were incredibly fortunate to arrive just as they opened, making us among the first customers in an empty shop. A rare treat!

I find myself constantly craving one of their biscuits, especially with a generous dollop of pimento cheese. The South truly masters breakfast, and Callie’s is a testament to that. Caroline also highly recommended their iced French press coffee, declaring it one of the best she’d ever had. I wholeheartedly concur—it was perfectly brewed and incredibly refreshing.

As if biscuits weren’t enough, we indulged further by hopping across the street to Glazed, a delightful donut shop that beckoned us with its tempting aromas.

Wandering Through Historic Downtown Charleston
After our indulgent breakfast, we embarked on an extensive stroll through downtown Charleston, a necessary walk to counterbalance all the delicious food we had just consumed! Every corner revealed another charming vista.

What immediately strikes you about Charleston is its abundance of parks and verdant spaces. It’s a beautifully green and family-friendly city, so much so that I might just be tempted to move here someday.

Downtown Charleston is home to some truly remarkable houses. This particular one, with its magnificent views of the water and patios on every level, absolutely captivated me. It’s the kind of dream home you can’t help but covet.

The iconic Rainbow Row, with its vibrantly painted historic homes, instantly reminded me of Notting Hill, albeit with the added charm of palm trees swaying in the Southern breeze.

The cobblestone streets add another layer of old-world charm, inviting you to slow down and soak in the history.

And what’s a stroll through historic Charleston without witnessing a horse-drawn carriage gently clip-clopping through the neighborhoods? It’s a delightful sight you don’t encounter every day.

On our way back, we couldn’t resist stopping at a local honey shop. It was a glorious experience, with countless varieties of honey, each offering a unique flavor profile to sample and enjoy.

Lunchtime Cravings: Fried Chicken and Southern Comfort
Despite our huge breakfast, our extensive five-mile walk through downtown had certainly worked up an appetite. Our next destination was Boxcar Betty’s, renowned for its legendary fried chicken sandwiches.

Forget Chick-fil-A! This fried chicken sandwich absolutely blew it out of the water, leaving me longing for its perfection day after day. It was so good, it makes me want to keep pimento cheese perpetually stocked in my fridge, just to pretend I’m back in Charleston.

Any establishment that serves fried pickles immediately earns a special place in my heart. I simply cannot resist them. My love for dill pickles, especially when fried, is so strong that you could probably convince me to do almost anything with a tray of them. And no, I’m not pregnant—though I do wonder how many I’ll consume if I ever am!

And naturally, I had to order their sweet potato fries. These weren’t just any sweet potato fries; they arrived fresh from the fryer, coated in a delicate dusting of brown sugar, which elevated them to an entirely new level of deliciousness.

Sunset Views and Evening Delights at Pitt Street Bridge
That evening, Caroline and I headed to Pitt Street Bridge, a local favorite, to catch the breathtaking sunset. The views were simply stunning, offering a serene end to a busy day.

We opted for a late dinner, still digesting the day’s earlier feasts. Edmund’s Oast, though slightly tucked away from the main downtown area, is an absolute must-visit. This establishment brews a remarkable array of beers in-house, and the entire atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed and inviting.

I spotted “rosé cider” on the menu and knew instantly I had to try it. It combined two of my favorite things in the universe, plus it was bubbly! This drink felt tailor-made for me, a perfect blend of flavors and effervescence.

Edmund’s Oast primarily offers small plates, which was perfect for Caroline and me as we love to share and sample a variety of dishes. We devoured the heirloom tomato salad, especially noting its incredible dressing. It was light, fresh, and bursting with flavor.

Then came the Japanese street corn—a fascinating twist on the classic Mexican version. I might actually prefer this one! It featured a unique miso butter that made it seriously unreal, a truly memorable dish.

The lamb meatballs were succulent and rich, another highlight from their inventive small plates menu.

This toast was incredibly delicious. If memory serves me right, I believe it was topped with thinly sliced scallops, offering a delicate and fresh contrast to the crisp bread.

Morning Brews and Epic Brunch: Coffee & Waffles
The following morning, our first stop was Orange Spot Coffeehouse. Caroline highly recommended their cha yen (Thai iced tea), and having never tried it before, I was instantly hooked. Its gorgeous color and unique flavor profile made it an instant favorite.

Next, we drove over to Page’s Okra Grill, where we were treated to the most epic chicken and waffles. This classic Southern brunch dish was perfectly executed, combining crispy fried chicken with fluffy waffles for a truly satisfying meal.

Feeling the onset of a delicious food coma, we sought more caffeine. We found our salvation at Saint Alban, a coffee shop I instantly fell in love with. I wish we had such charming and aesthetically pleasing coffee spots closer to home.

We continued our exploration with more walks, admiring the parks and magnificent old trees (just look at the size of this one!). However, the day was getting quite hot, and with baby Hayden in tow, we eventually decided it was time to head home and relax. We all agreed we were “over it” for the moment and simply craved some downtime.

Evening Indulgence: Crave Kitchen’s Award-Winning Mac & Cheese
A few hours after returning home, hunger struck again. We made a quick trip to a nearby shopping center and found ourselves at Crave Kitchen. This place is famous because its chef has won mac & cheese competitions year after year, so I absolutely had to try some. Caroline ordered the pulled pork mac & cheese, a hearty and flavorful choice.

As for me, I couldn’t resist the short rib mac & cheese. I’m a huge fan of anything short rib, and this dish did not disappoint—it was rich, comforting, and perfectly cheesy.

A Serene Moment: Charleston Fish Market
This next moment was separate from my culinary tour with Caroline. It was captured during the photography workshop’s second-to-last day, when Helene and Chef John took us to a local fish market. I simply found this scene incredibly serene, with the majestic, crane-like bird standing gracefully in the middle of the water.

And then, to our delight, the fishermen offered the bird some shrimp—a charming interaction that added to the peaceful ambiance.
