A Culinary Adventure in Seattle: Discovering the Emerald City’s Flavors
After a memorable visit to Vancouver, our journey continued southward, bringing us back to the lively and ever-charming city of Seattle. This leg of our 2011 Pacific Northwest adventure promised a deep dive into the Emerald City’s gastronomic delights, focusing less on conventional tourist attractions and more on the rich, diverse culinary landscape that makes Seattle a true food lover’s paradise.
Finding Our Home Base: The Silver Cloud Hotel in Capitol Hill
Our experience with Hotwire for a Seattle hotel wasn’t quite as smooth as our Vancouver booking, leading us to a location that, while served by a convenient shuttle, was a bit of a trek from downtown. The Silver Cloud Hotel in Capitol Hill, situated just off Broadway, was a good eleven blocks away from the bustling city center. However, any initial reservations about the distance quickly evaporated upon arrival. The hotel itself was a true gem – beautifully appointed, seemingly newly renovated, and exceptionally comfortable. Its inviting ambiance and excellent service more than compensated for its slightly removed position.
What truly elevated our stay, however, was the hotel’s location within Capitol Hill. This vibrant neighborhood, known for its eclectic mix of boutiques, lively nightlife, and diverse dining options, turned out to be an absolute dream for foodies like Jason and me. Capitol Hill is a hub of culinary innovation and traditional comfort food alike, offering an endless array of choices within walking distance or a short ride. Adding to its appeal, the hotel was conveniently located directly across the street from Seattle University, giving the area a youthful, energetic vibe.
The Heartbeat of Seattle: Pike Place Market
Our first order of business upon settling into Seattle was to check into our hotel, then immediately hop on the shuttle bound for downtown. Our destination: the legendary Pike Place Market. This iconic public market, established in 1907, is far more than just a place to shop; it’s a sensory experience, a historical landmark, and a vibrant community hub all rolled into one. From the moment we stepped out of the shuttle, the sights, sounds, and smells of the market enveloped us, signaling the start of our true Seattle culinary exploration.
As my collaged photo above beautifully illustrates, Pike Place Market is a kaleidoscope of activity. It’s teeming with vendors proudly displaying their freshest catches of seafood, mountains of vibrant, seasonal produce, and an endless stream of people – locals going about their daily shopping, curious tourists, and fellow food enthusiasts. Beyond the famous fish throwing and flower stalls, the market is a treasure trove of incredible food eateries, each offering a unique taste of Seattle’s rich culinary scene.
Must-Try Delights at Pike Place Market: A Foodie’s Paradise
Beecher’s Handmade Cheese: The World’s Best Mac ‘N Cheese
Beecher’s Handmade Cheese
Our first stop had to be Beecher’s Handmade Cheese, a place renowned for what many claim to be the “World’s Best Mac ‘N Cheese.” This bold claim is no exaggeration; it was seriously melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The cheese sauce was unbelievably velvety smooth, rich, and deeply flavorful, coating every piece of pasta with luxurious goodness. It was a dish that instantly transported us to a state of pure comfort and gastronomic bliss. It truly makes sense why even a small block of Beecher’s artisanal cheese commands a price of $17 – the quality and flavor are simply unparalleled. Watching the cheese-making process through their large windows only adds to the experience, making you appreciate the craft behind every bite.
Piroshky, Piroshky: Russian Bakery Delights
Piroshky, Piroshky
Next on our list was Piroshky, Piroshky, a celebrated Russian bakery that has become an institution at Pike Place Market. This bustling little shop offers an incredible array of sweet and savory pastries, known as piroshkies. From tender beef and onion to flavorful potato and cheese, and delightful apple and cinnamon, there’s a piroshky for every palate. The dough is wonderfully light and slightly crisp, yielding to perfectly seasoned fillings. When culinary legend Anthony Bourdain makes a point to visit a place, you know it’s a must-try, and Piroshky, Piroshky certainly lived up to the hype. It’s an ideal spot for a quick, satisfying bite while exploring the market.
Mee Sum Pastry: Authentic Steamed BBQ Buns
Mee Sum Pastry
Oh man, Mee Sum Pastry was another standout! This place had the absolute best steamed BBQ buns we’d tasted in a long time. The buns were incredibly soft and fluffy, encasing a generous filling of sweet and savory barbecued pork. Each bite was a delightful burst of flavor and texture, perfectly capturing the essence of authentic Chinese dim sum. For me, it was a taste that brought back cherished childhood memories and nostalgic thoughts of Taiwan. We loved them so much that Jason and I made sure to grab a few for breakfast one morning, savoring every warm, comforting bite as we planned our day.
The Original Starbucks: A Coffee Icon
Of course, no visit to Pike Place Market would be complete without a pilgrimage to the first original Starbucks. While it might seem like just another coffee shop, this location holds a special place in coffee history. It’s a humble testament to the brand’s origins, featuring the original brown logo and a perpetually long line of eager patrons. Even if you’re not planning to buy a coffee, experiencing the birthplace of the global coffee giant is a fascinating moment, connecting you to a significant piece of Seattle’s identity.
Capitol Hill’s Evening Delights: Pubs and Sandwiches
Our culinary explorations weren’t confined solely to Pike Place Market. Our hotel’s location in Capitol Hill proved to be incredibly advantageous for discovering fantastic dining options closer to our temporary home, especially for dinner.
Quinn’s: Industrial Chic with Gourmet Pub Fare
Quinn’s
One evening, we ventured to Quinn’s, a really nice and trendy pub situated in the heart of the Capitol Hill district. The ambiance was a captivating blend of industrial chic and cozy comfort. The restaurant boasted an open ceiling, revealing exposed piping and rustic brick walls, creating a stylish yet welcoming atmosphere. It felt simultaneously modern and inviting, making it a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. And the food? It was impressively good. I opted for the wild boar sloppy joe, a gourmet twist on a classic, which was rich, savory, and incredibly satisfying. Jason, always one for something unique, enjoyed a perfectly prepared veal dish. For our appetizer, we indulged in their infamous fontina cheese and beef consommé fries. These were an interesting, indulgent treat – crispy fries drizzled with a rich beef consommé and a generous amount of fontina cheese. While Jason absolutely loved them, I found the aroma of the fontina cheese a bit strong for my liking, but their popularity speaks volumes about their unique flavor profile.
Honey Hole: Sandwich Heaven with Legendary Fries
We saved one of the best for last, for our final night in Seattle. While I regrettably didn’t capture any photos, the memory of this place remains vividly delicious. We stumbled upon Honey Hole, a sandwich shop that instantly became a favorite. Their sandwiches were truly to die for, crafted with imaginative ingredients and bursting with flavor. The names themselves were wonderfully quirky and added to the fun; Jason bravely ordered “The Gooch,” while I, with a laugh, chose “The Dude.” Beyond the fantastic sandwiches, Honey Hole served up what were arguably THE BEST fries we had during our entire trip. They were consistently super crispy and golden on the outside, providing that perfect crunch, yet wonderfully soft and fluffy on the inside. This ideal combination of textures elevated them from a mere side dish to a star attraction. If you ever find yourself in the Seattle area, make a point to give Honey Hole a try – you won’t regret it!
Beyond the Plate: Seattle’s Unique Charm
As you can probably gather from this detailed account, our time in Seattle was predominantly a culinary expedition. We deliberately chose to immerse ourselves in the city’s food culture, spending a significant amount of our time at Pike Place Market and exploring the diverse eateries of Capitol Hill, rather than ticking off the typical tourist attractions like the Space Needle. This approach allowed us to truly savor the local flavors and experience Seattle through its vibrant gastronomic scene.
Regarding the weather, Seattle certainly lived up to some of its reputation, though with its own unique twist. We observed a pattern where mornings and early afternoons were often characterized by cloudy skies or light rain, maintaining that iconic “Emerald City” mystique. However, almost like clockwork, around 5 PM, the clouds would often break, and the sun would emerge, gracing us with a few hours of beautiful, clear skies before dusk. This daily transformation added another layer to the city’s charming atmosphere.
Our journey through Seattle was an unforgettable experience, brimming with incredible tastes, discoveries, and the warmth of local hospitality. The city’s ability to blend iconic markets with innovative local restaurants makes it a captivating destination for anyone who appreciates good food.
