Chorizo Garlic Inferno Cheeseburger

Weekends often feel too short, especially when work obligations cut into precious leisure time. Recently, a Saturday commitment meant a slightly abridged weekend for me. Thankfully, the weather wasn’t particularly inviting – a surprisingly chilly spring day, complete with reports of snow further north! It was hardly the kind of beautiful spring weather one would lament missing, softening the blow of a shorter weekend.

The thought of warmer climes, however, was already taking shape. I was soon heading to Los Angeles, the land of perpetual sunshine and ideal weather. The anticipation was palpable! I couldn’t wait to share the exciting reason behind my trip, promising a reveal very soon. For those eager for a sneak peek, following along on Instagram and Snapchat offered exclusive glimpses before the full story hit the blog. This journey promised not just a change of scenery, but a fresh perspective on culinary delights and travel experiences.

The Great Burger Debate: In-N-Out vs. Shake Shack – And Why Homemade Wins

California is synonymous with many things, and for burger enthusiasts, In-N-Out often sits at the top of that list. It’s practically a pilgrimage for visitors, a mandatory stop right after landing at LAX. But here’s where I might part ways with popular opinion: I just don’t understand the pervasive hype. While I respect its cult following and classic appeal, my personal experience often leaves me underwhelmed. The fries, to put it mildly, taste remarkably like cardboard – dry, pale, and utterly lacking in that irresistible crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside quality one craves. Even their “Animal Style” burgers, which boast extra sauce and grilled onions, haven’t managed to convert me. While certainly edible, they don’t quite hit the mark for a truly memorable burger experience. It’s a testament to consistency, perhaps, but not necessarily to culinary excellence in my book.

Now, let’s shift gears and talk about Shake Shack. For me, Shake Shack exists on an entirely different plane of burger existence. It’s not merely a fast-food joint; it’s a destination for a genuinely superior burger experience. Their patties are consistently juicy and flavorful, cooked to perfection, and their signature crinkle-cut fries? They are a revelation – always extra crispy, piping hot, and perfectly salted. It’s a texture and taste sensation that In-N-Out simply can’t match. The contrast between the two is so stark that comparing them feels almost unfair. Shake Shack elevates the humble burger to an art form, proving that even a quick meal can be an extraordinary gastronomic event.

Crafting the Ultimate Kick: Introducing the Hot Pepper Garlic Chorizo Cheeseburger

My adoration for Shake Shack particularly extends to their Smoke Shack burger, a masterpiece topped with hot peppers, cheese, and crispy bacon. Inspired by this bold combination, I embarked on a culinary experiment in my own kitchen. I decided to take the essence of the Smoke Shack and infuse it with an even more exciting twist. While bacon is a delicious addition, I (accidentally, but fortuitously!) omitted it this time, opting instead to blend ground beef with savory, spicy ground chorizo. This simple substitution transformed an already flavorful burger into something truly exceptional, boosting its depth and introducing a vibrant, smoky heat that tantalizes the taste buds. The result? A homemade hot pepper garlic chorizo cheeseburger that isn’t just an average patty; it’s a gourmet creation, a symphony of flavors and textures that you’ll absolutely want to sink your teeth into.

This burger is a celebration of bold flavors. The chorizo doesn’t just add spice; it brings a rich, nuanced savory note that elevates the entire experience. When combined with the creamy melted cheese and the fiery kick of hot pepper garlic sauce, each bite is an adventure. The beauty of making your own gourmet burgers is the freedom to customize. While my accidental omission of bacon led to this chorizo-infused delight, feel free to add bacon back in if you wish! It’s all about creating a burger that perfectly suits your palate. This recipe isn’t just about cooking; it’s about crafting an unforgettable meal that brings the excitement of a high-end burger joint right to your dining table.

Hot Pepper Garlic Chorizo Cheeseburger

By: Julie Chiou
You’re going to want to sink your teeth into these hot pepper garlic chorizo cheeseburgers!
Prep Time: 15
Cook Time: 10
Total Time: 25
Servings: 6

Equipment

  • Cast iron skillet
  • Outdoor grill

Ingredients

  • ½ pound (227 g) ground beef
  • ½ pound (227 g) fresh chorizo sausage,, casings removed
  • 1 cup (132 g) of freshly shredded Colby Jack cheese
  • Hot pepper garlic sauce,, for topping
  • Salt,, to taste
  • Brioche buns

Instructions

  • In a medium-sized bowl, gently mix together the ground beef and fresh chorizo sausage with your hands. Be careful not to overwork the meat, as this can lead to tough patties. Form the mixture into six thin, uniform patties, ensuring they are slightly larger than your buns as they will shrink during cooking. Set them aside on a plate or baking sheet.
    1/2 pound (227 g) ground beef, 1/2 pound (227 g) fresh chorizo sausage
  • Preheat a cast iron skillet or outdoor grill to medium-high heat. Allow the skillet or grill to get thoroughly hot, ensuring a good sear on the patties. Place the formed patties onto the hot surface. Brown both sides for about 2-3 minutes per side to create a delicious crust. Then, reduce the heat to medium-low and continue cooking until your desired level of doneness is reached. For a medium-rare burger, this might be another 3-4 minutes per side, while well-done could take 6-7 minutes per side. Use a meat thermometer to ensure safe internal temperatures if preferred.
  • To assemble these irresistible burgers: lightly toast the brioche buns for a minute or two on the grill or in the skillet for added warmth and texture. Place a cooked patty on the bottom half of each brioche bun. Immediately top with a generous amount of freshly shredded Colby Jack cheese, allowing it to melt beautifully over the hot patty. Drizzle generously with hot pepper garlic sauce. Finally, season with a pinch of salt to taste, adding a final flourish of flavor before capping with the top bun. Serve immediately and prepare for a taste explosion!

Notes

Feel free to add crispy bacon strips to this burger for an extra layer of smoky flavor and crunch. These burgers pair wonderfully with a side of crispy crinkle-cut fries (like Shake Shack’s!), a fresh garden salad, or even some roasted sweet potato wedges. For a refreshing beverage pairing, consider a cold craft beer or a zesty lemonade.
