Indigo Bloom Jam

Savoring Sweet Moments: The Joy of True Friendships & Homemade Blueberry Lavender Jam

There are some weekends that etch themselves into your memory, leaving a lasting warmth long after they’ve passed. I was incredibly fortunate to experience such a weekend recently, hosting two of my cherished blogger friends right here in my home. The laughter was continuous, the conversations deep and soul-stirring, and the bonds we share felt stronger than ever. It’s truly a special feeling when you have friends with whom you can share anything – your biggest dreams, your silliest secrets – and know you’ll be met with unwavering support, genuine understanding, or refreshingly blunt, honest advice. These are the connections that nourish your spirit and remind you of what truly matters.

Beyond the heartfelt chats, having fellow food bloggers in town meant our culinary adventures were nothing short of spectacular. We embarked on a delicious exploration, ticking off two new restaurants from Jason’s and my ever-growing DC dining bucket list. Each dish was a symphony of flavors, a testament to the vibrant culinary scene this city offers. What made these experiences even more special was the shared passion for food, the ability to dissect flavors, ingredients, and presentation with people who truly ‘get it.’ We also discovered a hidden gem – a local market I likely wouldn’t have ventured to on my own, but which, through the eyes of my foodie friends, became a treasure trove of inspiration and unique finds. Every moment felt precious, and I found myself wishing the weekend could extend indefinitely. True friendships are like that; you never tire of the company, and you never want the good times to end. These are the friendships designed to last a lifetime, enriching every chapter of your journey.

The Unwavering Power of Genuine Connections

The magic of that initial weekend didn’t fade; it simply shifted into another beautiful phase. Soon after my blogger friends departed, another group of incredible women, friends from college, arrived for a delightful lunch. This weekend, I was undeniably in an entertaining mood – a testament to my ongoing efforts to embrace hosting more frequently! This college crew is another prime example of those ‘never tire’ friendships. We shared countless hours in the same Chinese language classes throughout our university years, forming a bond that has impressively endured for over six years. Life has certainly gotten busier for all of us, scattering us across different paths and demanding schedules, making regular meet-ups a challenge. Yet, we make a concerted effort to gather at least once every quarter, and without fail, we pick up right where we left off, as if no time has passed at all. It’s a heartwarming feeling, one that fills my heart with immense gratitude, to know these steadfast friendships are a cornerstone of my life.

In a world often preoccupied with digital connections and superficial metrics, the value of genuine, face-to-face friendships cannot be overstated. I remember in high school, there was a noticeable emphasis on the sheer *quantity* of friends one accumulated on social media platforms like Facebook. It was almost a badge of honor, a measure of popularity. However, as I’ve matured and navigated through different life stages, a profound realization has settled in: it’s not about the quantity of your connections, but unequivocally, it’s about the quality. A handful of truly authentic, supportive, and understanding friends will always outweigh a vast network of acquaintances. These are the people who celebrate your triumphs, lift you during your struggles, and offer an unwavering presence. Nurturing such deep, meaningful relationships requires effort, honesty, and vulnerability, but the rewards—the unwavering support, unconditional love, and shared laughter—are immeasurable and undeniably what we all truly need.

The Magic of Blueberry Lavender Jam: A Culinary Delight

Speaking of delightful things, let’s talk about one of my absolute favorite flavor combinations: blueberry and lavender. There’s something inherently sophisticated yet comforting about the pairing of the sweet, slightly tart notes of blueberries with the delicate, aromatic essence of lavender. If you’re a fan, you simply must try my blueberry lavender cake that I created a couple of years ago – it’s a true showstopper! However, if the thought of baking a whole cake feels a bit daunting, or if you’re simply looking for a quicker way to satisfy your blueberry lavender craving, this homemade blueberry lavender jam is your perfect solution.

The beauty of this jam extends beyond its exquisite taste. Much like my blackberry lemon jam, the color of this blueberry lavender creation is absolutely stunning. As the blueberries cook down, they release a rich, jewel-toned pigment, which, when combined with the subtle infusion of lavender, results in a gorgeous, deep purple hue. This vibrant spread is incredibly versatile and quickly became a staple in our kitchen. We particularly love swirling it into our Greek yogurt every morning, topped with some crunchy granola and fresh fruit. It effortlessly transforms a simple breakfast into an elegant and flavorful experience, giving the yogurt the most beautiful shade of purple and adding an unparalleled depth of flavor. Beyond yogurt, imagine it spread generously on warm buttered toast, a fluffy scone, or even drizzled over pancakes and waffles. Its unique flavor profile also makes it an excellent accompaniment to a cheese board or as a glaze for savory dishes like pork loin.

Crafting this jam at home is not only incredibly rewarding but also surprisingly simple. It allows you to control the quality of your ingredients and the amount of sugar, ensuring a healthier and fresher product than most store-bought alternatives. The aroma that fills your kitchen as the blueberries simmer and the lavender infuses is an experience in itself – a gentle, calming scent that foreshadows the deliciousness to come. This jam isn’t just a recipe; it’s a testament to simple pleasures, shared moments, and the joy of creating something beautiful and delicious from scratch. It’s a jar full of sunshine, ready to brighten any meal or be shared as a thoughtful gift with those cherished friends who make life so sweet.

This blueberry lavender jam is a simple yet elegant spread, perfect for elevating your breakfast oatmeal, yogurt, or toast with its unique floral and fruity notes.
Prep Time:

Cook Time:
30 minutes
Total Time:
35 minutes
Yields:
16 Servings

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds (907 g) blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • Juice of 1 lemon, see note
  • 2-3 drops of food-grade lavender essential oil

Instructions

  1. In a medium pot set over medium-high heat, combine the blueberries, granulated sugar, and the juice of 1 lemon.
  2. Allow the blueberries to cook down, stirring frequently, until they begin to soften and burst. Reduce the heat to medium-low and, using the back of a wooden spoon or spatula, gently press the berries against the side of the pot to help them break down further.
  3. Continue cooking until the blueberry mixture has significantly reduced and visibly thickened, which should take approximately 30 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
  4. Once slightly cooled, add the lavender essential oil and stir thoroughly to ensure it is well incorporated throughout the jam.
  5. Carefully divide the warm jam mixture evenly into clean mason jars. Store the sealed jars in the refrigerator for enjoyment for up to two months.

Notes

The fresh lemon juice plays a crucial role in thickening the jam naturally due to its pectin content. If you desire an even thicker consistency, you can opt to add a small amount of pectin powder during the cooking process.

It is important to add the lavender essential oil *after* removing the pot from heat and allowing the jam to cool slightly. High heat can diminish the aromatic qualities and beneficial properties of the essential oil.
