Saturday Morning: Coffee Culture and East Nashville’s Unique Charm
Saturday kicked off bright and early with Tabitha picking me up from my hotel in bustling downtown Nashville. Our destination? The vibrant and increasingly popular East Nashville, a hub of creativity and home to the highly acclaimed Barista Parlor. This renowned coffee shop was our rendezvous point to meet Leah and Amy, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the city’s thriving coffee scene. As a true admirer of a perfectly brewed cup, I was thrilled with Tabitha and Leah’s choice. Barista Parlor is celebrated not only for its innovative latte creations but also for its commitment to using Intelligentsia coffee, a brand synonymous with exceptional flavor and consistent quality. Every sip was a delight, a testament to their dedication to the craft of coffee making.
Beyond the exquisite coffee, the aesthetic of Barista Parlor left a lasting impression. It’s a masterclass in industrial-chic design, boasting a distinctly hipster vibe that felt both raw and refined. The expansive space is thoughtfully curated, with every element, from the sturdy communal tables to the expansive counters, seemingly crafted from beautifully reclaimed wood. This commitment to sustainability and unique design truly sets it apart, creating an atmosphere that is simultaneously welcoming and effortlessly cool. It was so visually appealing, in fact, that I found myself playfully wishing I could somehow fit one of their tabletops into my suitcase – it would make the most incredible, rustic backdrop for food photography back home!

Their menu, presented as a beautifully designed piece in itself, offered an array of tempting options that made my choice delightfully difficult. Each item promised a unique culinary experience, perfectly complementing their exceptional coffee.

Despite the warm Tennessee weather, I simply couldn’t resist ordering their salted caramel Tennessee whiskey latte. It sounded too unique and indulgent to pass up, and I’m so incredibly glad I didn’t. The rich, complex notes of the Tennessee whiskey mingled perfectly with the sweet and salty caramel, creating a luxurious and utterly divine coffee experience that I savored with every single sip. It was, quite literally, a drink to die for, offering a perfect blend of comfort and sophistication.

A charming and prevalent detail I noticed throughout my Nashville visit was the widespread use of Mason jars for serving drinks. This rustic, distinctly Southern touch adds such a cute, homey, and welcoming feel to beverages, perfectly encapsulating the city’s blend of tradition and charm.

Of course, a visit to a coffee shop as revered as Barista Parlor wouldn’t be complete without indulging in one of their renowned pastries. I opted for the peach waffles, and they were nothing short of exceptional. Light, fluffy, and generously adorned with the sweet, juicy flavor of fresh peaches, they were the perfect accompaniment to my latte and a truly memorable breakfast treat. Each bite was a celebration of fresh, local ingredients.

It was wonderful to see Amy again, glowing with happiness and maternal pride alongside her sweet newborn. These are the precious moments that make blog friendships so special and deeply rewarding.

A precious group shot of us all, capturing the camaraderie and joy of our morning: Amy and her little one, Tabitha, myself, and Leah. Such fantastic company to start what would be a truly memorable day!

Barista Parlor’s unique architectural elements are truly captivating. The space, with its impressive high ceilings and expansive, open layout, strongly suggested it might have once been a body shop or another type of industrial building. This repurposed charm is a huge part of its appeal, contributing to an effortlessly cool, authentic atmosphere that draws you in.

Exploring Nashville’s Landmarks and Savoring Local Flavors
After our delightful coffee and breakfast at Barista Parlor, we took some time to wander through the charming and eclectic streets of East Nashville. This vibrant neighborhood is a treasure trove of independent boutiques, quirky antique shops, and stunning street art, offering a wonderful glimpse into Nashville’s creative and artistic spirit. Each storefront and alleyway seemed to tell its own unique story. Following our leisurely stroll, Tabitha drove us to the bustling farmer’s market, conveniently located near the magnificent Bicentennial Mall. This expansive urban park is not only a beautiful green space but also holds significant historical value, commemorating Tennessee’s 200th anniversary.
On the opposite side of Bicentennial Mall, we discovered an absolute highlight: an incredible 3D map of Tennessee. It was a truly unique and interactive experience to walk all over this detailed topographical representation of the state, marveling at its geography, mountains, and rivers. Just beyond this impressive installation stood the stately Tennessee State Capitol building, a majestic symbol of the state’s rich history and governance. And, humorously, in the background, somewhat marring the picturesque scene, was the Sheraton hotel – where, by a stroke of coincidence, I ended up staying that very Saturday evening! It was a fun juxtaposition of historic grandeur and modern convenience.

Our hunger growing steadily with all the walking and exploring, we made our way back into East Nashville for lunch, where we were delightfully joined by Alexandra, who conveniently lives just around the corner from our next culinary stop. We had plans to dine at Silly Goose, a highly recommended local eatery. However, upon arrival, we were informed of an hour-long wait, which might deter some, but not us! Rather than letting this dampen our spirits, we seized the opportunity to indulge in another local favorite right next door: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Waiting for lunch has never been sweeter or more enjoyable!

Stepping into Jeni’s is an experience for all the senses, primarily olfactory. If only they could capture that incredible, intoxicating aroma in a candle or perfume! The moment you cross the threshold, your nose is immediately enveloped by the most amazing, comforting, and utterly delicious scent of freshly baked waffle cones. It’s truly a perfume of pure happiness and delicious anticipation, setting the stage for the delectable treats to come.

For my scoop, I opted for a divine and highly popular combination: the irresistible salty caramel paired with the rich, nutty, and wonderfully crunchy brown butter almond brittle. It was an exquisite blend of sweet, salty, and textural contrasts that I, quite frankly, inhaled with gusto. A true testament to Jeni’s mastery of crafting unique and decadent ice cream flavors that keep you coming back for more.

Tabitha chose a tempting duo as well, which I believe included a boysenberry streusel, offering a delightful fruity tang and crumble, alongside the ever-popular and consistently delicious salty caramel. Each spoonful seemed to transport us to a realm of pure dessert bliss, a perfect midday treat.

Another decadent choice at our table featured a luscious dark chocolate, providing a deep, intense cocoa flavor that was perfectly balanced by the ubiquitous and beloved salty caramel. It’s a classic combination executed to perfection by Jeni’s.

This particular creation combined similar delightful flavors but with the addition of Jeni’s famous “gravel” topping. Let me tell you, that gravel is *exceptionally* good – a crunchy, chocolatey, and utterly addictive element that elevates the entire ice cream experience to another level of indulgence. A must-try addition!

Beyond the delicious treats, Jeni’s also impressed with its creative and charming interior design. I particularly loved their innovative and whimsical use of repurposed milk jugs as unique light fixtures – a charming and sustainable touch that added significantly to the shop’s already distinctive character.

Finally, our wait for Silly Goose was over, and we were seated for lunch, eagerly anticipating more culinary delights. Our appetizer, the “King Kong Couscous,” immediately stole the show. This dish was so incredibly flavorful, perfectly spiced, and utterly addictive that we unanimously agreed we could have easily ordered a second plate just for ourselves. We devoured it in record time, savoring every unique bite! It was so memorable, in fact, that I was inspired to recreate it in my own kitchen just last weekend, so definitely keep an eye out for that recipe on the blog soon. It truly embodies the innovative and delicious spirit of Nashville’s casual dining scene, offering a fresh take on classic ingredients.

Saturday Evening: An Unforgettable Fine Dining Experience at Mason’s Nashville
After our flavorful lunch at Silly Goose, Tabitha kindly dropped me off at my hotel. It was the perfect opportunity to check in, freshen up, and perhaps even sneak in a quick nap – a much-needed respite before what promised to be an incredible evening of fine dining. I had made dinner reservations at Mason’s, a restaurant I had heard glowing reviews about, and it certainly lived up to its reputation as a premier destination for elevated Southern cuisine in Nashville. The ambiance was sophisticated yet welcoming, hinting at the culinary artistry we were about to experience.

The restaurant’s name, “Mason’s,” cleverly played into a delightful and fitting theme: many of their signature drinks and even some creative dishes were served in stylish Mason jars. This fun, thematic touch added a charming, rustic elegance to the upscale dining experience, creating a unique blend of Southern hospitality and refined presentation.

To start my evening meal, I chose the blackberry mojito, and it was simply sublime. I have a particular fondness for mojitos, especially those infused with vibrant fruit flavors, and this one did not disappoint in the slightest. The perfect balance of sweet and tart blackberries perfectly complemented the refreshing mint and zesty lime, creating a wonderfully balanced, invigorating, and utterly delicious cocktail. It was the ideal way to kick off a memorable dinner.

Our table indulged in a series of innovative appetizers that truly showcased Mason’s unique and elevated take on Southern classics. First to arrive were the fried green tomatoes, a beloved staple, but here they were elevated with succulent crab meat, tender field peas, creamy feta cheese, and a hint of smoky pepper aioli. This dish was an exquisite symphony of flavors and textures – the crisp, tangy tomatoes, the sweet crab, and the smoky, creamy aioli made for a truly unforgettable starter. It was a sophisticated reimagining of a beloved Southern staple, bursting with fresh ingredients and bold flavors.

Next, an intriguing presentation of “Jars” arrived: individual Mason jars filled with perfectly seasoned pimento cheese, creamy lima bean hummus, and a vibrant, sweet, and spicy pepper jelly, all elegantly served with delicate olive oil crackers. This sharing plate was a delightful exploration of classic Southern spreads, offering rich, creamy, and spicy notes that invited delightful conversation and communal dipping. It was a playful yet refined way to experience regional flavors.

The “Devil of an Egg” was another culinary revelation that transformed a simple Southern classic into a gourmet delight. These deviled eggs were exquisitely prepared and elevated with an irresistible bacon jam and exquisite mustard seed caviar, adding layers of flavor and texture. Each bite was a burst of savory, smoky, and subtly tangy flavors, a testament to thoughtful ingredient pairings and refined technique.

And for a truly playful yet sophisticated twist, we sampled the Crab Corn Dogs with Mississippi Comeback Sauce. These miniature delights were perfectly crispy on the outside, encasing tender, sweet crab meat within, and the zesty, creamy comeback sauce provided a fantastic kick that was utterly addictive. This dish was a fantastic example of Southern ingenuity seamlessly integrated into a fine dining context, offering both comfort and refinement.

Beth’s drink choice, “The Front Porch,” sounded equally intriguing and refreshing: Ketel One Vodka expertly blended with housemade watermelon soda. Watermelon soda! The concept itself was awesome and incredibly unique, and the taste was even better – it was wonderfully refreshing, subtly sweet, and surprisingly sophisticated, perfectly capturing the lighthearted essence of a Southern summer evening in a glass.

For my main course, I took a leap of faith and ordered the “Fried Chicken Galantine” with turnip puree, a rich bourbon mustard jus, and vibrant, spicy collards. The initial description of a galantine, which can involve deboning and stuffing, can sound a bit intimidating or unusual, making me hesitate, but I am so incredibly glad I pushed past that reservation. This dish was an absolute revelation! The chicken was impossibly tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the earthy and smooth turnip puree, the rich, slightly sweet bourbon mustard jus, and the wonderfully vibrant, spicy collard greens. I honestly could not stop eating it – every bite was a testament to Mason’s culinary artistry and undoubtedly a highlight of my entire Nashville dining experience.

Leah opted for the elegant Seared Halibut, a lighter yet equally refined choice from Mason’s menu. It was served with a delicate medley of English peas, fresh fennel, tender cauliflower, earthy shiitake mushrooms, and a delicate lemongrass reduction. This dish showcased a beautiful balance of flavors and textures, proving Mason’s versatility beyond traditional Southern fare.

Beth ventured into more adventurous and flavorful territory with the Smoked Pork and Huitlacoche Tacos. These creative tacos featured a rich Olive and Sinclair Mole, creamy Farmer’s Cheese, and a vibrant Blistered Corn Relish. This dish was a truly impressive fusion, blending rich, smoky pork with the unique, earthy notes of huitlacoche, all brought together by complex mole and fresh, Southern-inspired accompaniments.

Alex chose the vibrant Grilled Peach Salad, a perfect seasonal offering that celebrated fresh, local ingredients. It combined peppery arugula, tangy Asher Blue Cheese, savory TN Prosciutto, and a refreshing Basil Vinaigrette. It was a beautifully composed and balanced salad, highlighting the sweet and savory elements of Southern produce with sophisticated flair.

Before dessert, we were presented with a basket of popovers, served alongside a side of rich sorghum molasses butter. While the butter itself was quite good, offering a lovely, deep Southern sweetness that was truly delightful, the popovers themselves were unfortunately a bit of a miss. They were unexpectedly doughy and dense, lacking the light, airy, hollow quality one typically expects from a true popover. A minor point in an otherwise stellar meal, but worth noting.

Just before our ordered desserts arrived, we were treated to an incredible and unexpected surprise! The entire culinary team from Mason’s – including the executive chefs, sous chefs, and the brilliant pastry chef – came out to our table to personally present each of us with a brand-new dessert they were still perfecting for their menu. It was aptly named a “pop of summer,” and it was nothing short of genius: a vibrant lemon curd lollipop adorned with real POP ROCKS, served alongside a delicate lemon poppyseed cake, and finished with a whimsical blackberry rosemary foam. The combination of creamy, tangy, crunchy, and effervescent textures and flavors was absolutely awesome – a true sensory explosion. This innovative creation should undoubtedly find its permanent place on their menu as soon as it’s fully perfected; it was a testament to their creativity and skill!

Faced with such an enticing and diverse dessert menu, we couldn’t possibly choose just one – so, naturally, we decided to order one of everything! The pastry chef herself then demonstrated some impressive tableside artistry, dramatically torching the spectacular T.N. Bombe right before our eyes. This dramatic dessert featured a luscious peach ice cream encased in a delicate buttermilk cake, all covered with a shimmering Italian meringue, and then theatrically flamed for a stunning visual finish. It was a true showstopper, both visually and gastronomically, a fitting finale to our main meal.

The Blueberry Crumb Cake was another highlight, offering comforting flavors and textures. It was served warm with a delicate, tangy cream cheese ice cream, creating a harmonious pairing of sweet and creamy, soft and slightly crumbly elements. A truly delightful and comforting dessert.

For the true chocolate lovers at the table, the Dark Chocolate Cremeux with macerated berries was an absolute dream. Rich, incredibly smooth, and intensely chocolatey, it was beautifully balanced by the freshness and slight tartness of the vibrant macerated berries. It was a sophisticated and satisfying dessert that hit all the right notes.

The Buttermilk Panna Cotta with strawberry-mint relish, however, was a slight disappointment in an otherwise flawless dessert spread. While the flavors of the panna cotta and the relish were pleasant and refreshing, the texture was unfortunately off. It arrived looking perfectly gelatinous and set, but as soon as it was placed on the table, it basically melted into a liquid, yogurt-like consistency. A minor hiccup, but noticeable.

A tantalizing peek inside the T.N. Bombe revealed its beautiful and perfectly layered interior of delicate peach ice cream and moist buttermilk cake, a stunning cross-section of flavor and artistry that tasted as good as it looked.

Dining with such fantastic company – Alex, Leah, myself, Erin, and Beth (Amy joined us for the early part of dinner but had to head home to put her precious little one to bed) – made the Mason’s experience even more delightful and memorable. It was a night filled with laughter, incredible food, and wonderful camaraderie among fellow food blogging friends.

Sunday Morning: Brunch Bliss and Farewell Moments in Music City
The culinary adventure continued unabated into Sunday morning, proving that there’s always room for more delicious food in Nashville. Beth, Tabitha, Leah, and I reconvened for a delightful brunch at Fido’s, a highly popular and beloved spot that’s a true staple in Nashville’s vibrant brunch scene, known for its relaxed atmosphere and consistently delicious offerings. To share among us and kick off our meal on a sweet note, I ordered their renowned blueberry lavender cake. It was so exquisitely moist, fragrant, and bursting with delicate flavors that I was immediately inspired to recreate it in my own kitchen, and I’m excited to say that recipe will be making an appearance on the blog this coming Monday!

Fido’s always boasts a tempting specials menu, and I had set my heart on trying their sweet potato French toast, which sounded absolutely incredible. However, fate had other plans for my brunch order! As I approached the counter to place my order, the kitchen staff regretfully announced that all specials had been “86-ed” (kitchen slang for being completely out of stock). A small disappointment, certainly, but I quickly pivoted, opting instead for a hearty and satisfying veggie scramble accompanied by delicious local sausage. It was still incredibly flavorful, packed with fresh ingredients, and thoroughly satisfying, a perfect example of Fido’s commitment to quality, even with unexpected changes.

Beth and Tabitha opted for Fido’s famous burger, and it looked absolutely magnificent – a towering, juicy creation piled high with fresh toppings that clearly satisfied their brunch cravings. The aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water!

A quick snapshot of Tabitha and me, cherishing these delightful moments of shared culinary exploration and friendship in Nashville.

Another lovely moment captured with Beth, Leah, and myself, enjoying our final Nashville brunch together, filled with good food and great company.
After our delightful and satisfying brunch, Leah and I headed to Lindsay’s beautiful home. It was a joy to finally meet her three sweet kitties, who were as charming and affectionate as I’d imagined, and to get a glimpse into the stylish “Love and Olive Oil” abode. I absolutely adored her place – its open floor plan, abundant natural light streaming in from enormous windows, and incredibly high ceilings created an airy, inspiring, and truly dream-worthy space that any blogger or creative would swoon over. It was a true vision of an ideal creative environment, perfectly reflecting Lindsay’s aesthetic.
Following our visit with Lindsay, Leah and I had planned to catch a movie, “This is the End,” before she dropped me off at the airport. We had heard glowing reviews about it being incredibly funny and a genuinely good movie, and the previews certainly looked promising, hinting at a lighthearted comedy. We even managed to convince Lindsay to join us, a decision we all came to regret deeply and almost immediately! Oh my goodness, the movie was absolutely horrendous! I felt genuinely dirty, somewhat traumatized, and frankly, a little embarrassed afterwards. Seriously, save yourselves the trouble; unless you’re a particular type of guy, you likely won’t appreciate its crude humor, gratuitous content, and overall tone. A definite low point in an otherwise absolutely perfect weekend!
Concluding Thoughts on a Delicious Nashville Getaway
Despite the regrettable cinematic misstep, my overall experience in Nashville was nothing short of fantastic and truly unforgettable. From the immersive Southern Baking Retreat that kicked off the week with flour and sweetness, to this incredible weekend spent eating my way through Nashville’s diverse and delectable food scene with an amazing group of talented food bloggers, I truly couldn’t have asked for a more perfect getaway. Every meal was an adventure, every restaurant a discovery. Even the weather gods cooperated beautifully, gracing us with pleasantly mild temperatures and low humidity, making our explorations and outdoor strolls all the more enjoyable. Nashville truly shone in every aspect.
My deepest gratitude goes out to everyone who contributed to making my visit to Nashville such an unforgettable and culinarily rich experience. The city’s undeniable charm, combined with the warmth of its people and the vibrant, innovative spirit of its food culture, has left an indelible mark on my heart and my palate. It’s a city that continuously delights and surprises. Next time, I’m definitely bringing Jason along to share in the magic and deliciousness of Nashville!
