This is your “dream trip” brainstorming phase; no idea is too ambitious yet. If you had unlimited time, where would you go? Document it all. Once you have this extensive list, consider the total number of days you have for your vacation.

Now, comes the critical “culling” phase. Look at your dream list in relation to your limited vacation days and the geographical spread of your chosen locations. How feasible is it to travel between these places? Can some be easily reached via efficient public transportation like high-speed trains or buses? Will you need to take an internal flight to cover vast distances? Is driving a viable and desirable option, or would it add unnecessary stress? Can certain smaller towns or attractions be explored as day trips from a larger base city, such as visiting Toledo from Madrid?

You want ample time in each chosen location to truly soak in its atmosphere, discover its nuances, and feel that you’ve thoroughly experienced what it has to offer. Prioritize quality over quantity.

Once you’ve narrowed down your core cities or regions (e.g., Paris and Normandy, or Tuscany, Rome, and Cinque Terre), the in-depth research begins. For each selected location, start compiling a detailed list of everything you might want to do, see, and eat. This could include museums, historical sites, unique local experiences, specific restaurants, markets, or scenic viewpoints.

From these detailed lists, you can then realistically determine the ideal number of days to allocate to each city or area. Only after you’ve finalized your cities and the duration of your stay in each do you move on to booking accommodations, whether that’s hotels or Airbnbs.

While I understand the appeal of Airbnbs, particularly their potential for cost savings and a more local experience, we generally prefer hotels. We’ve only had one truly exceptional Airbnb experience. For us, the consistent quality, reliable service, and amenities offered by hotels often outweigh the perceived benefits of short-term rentals, ensuring a comfortable and predictable stay.
