Our grand Irish adventure began the moment we touched down in Dublin. With the excitement of a new journey bubbling, our first order of business was to collect our rental car and set off immediately for the enchanting Connemara region, where a luxurious castle hotel awaited us. This scenic drive marked the true start of our exploration into the heart of Ireland’s wild west.

Landing at 5:15 in the morning meant the world was still largely asleep, shrouded in the pre-dawn darkness. We navigated the quiet roads, literally chasing the sunrise across the Irish countryside. The anticipation of the day ahead, combined with the serene beauty of the emerging landscape, made the early start an integral part of the experience.

A quick coffee at the airport terminal provided the much-needed fuel before we picked up our car. Our initial plan was to stop for a leisurely breakfast in Galway, a vibrant city often considered the gateway to Connemara. However, our early arrival meant most establishments wouldn’t open until 8:30 or 9:00 AM.

Fortunately, we discovered a charming coffee shop near Eyre Square in Galway that was already serving. We happily hopped in for warming lattes and a delicious breakfast, enjoying the city’s early morning tranquility. From Galway, it was a mere hour’s drive west to our castle hotel in Connemara, allowing us to arrive at our destination in record time, refreshed and ready for what awaited us.

A Royal Welcome: Our Stay at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel

Our chosen accommodation, the magnificent Ballynahinch Castle Hotel, is perfectly situated an hour west of Galway and directly along the famous Connemara Loop. We arrived around 11:00 AM, a little early for check-in, as guests were just beginning to depart. Our room wasn’t quite ready, but the staff, renowned for their warm Irish hospitality, welcomed us graciously.

They encouraged us to make ourselves at home, suggesting we relax in their inviting sunrooms or explore the extensive castle grounds until our suite became available. This unexpected interlude provided a wonderful opportunity to slowly immerse ourselves in the peaceful ambiance of Ballynahinch.

To fully embrace our new surroundings and shake off the travel weariness, we took a leisurely stroll around the castle’s beautiful estate. Ballynahinch truly feels like it’s nestled in the middle of nowhere, offering an unparalleled sense of peace and serenity. The crisp Irish air and the stunning natural beauty instantly began to work their magic.

Returning to the inviting common area, we settled in front of a roaring, real wood-burning fire – a feature I absolutely adore about Irish hotels. The intoxicating scent of burning timber and the intense heat were incredibly comforting. Overwhelmed by the red-eye flight and lack of sleep, I succumbed to a well-deserved 30-45 minute nap right there, rejuvenated by the warmth and tranquility.

The incredibly thoughtful lady at reception, aware of our early flight and obvious fatigue, expedited our check-in. To our delight, we were assigned an enormous suite with an absolutely breathtaking view, far exceeding our expectations. It was a wonderful gesture that truly enhanced our initial experience.

I immediately took a refreshing shower and changed into comfortable pajamas, ready to unwind until dinner. That night, we slept profoundly, waking up the next morning feeling completely refreshed and eagerly anticipating our adventures along the scenic Connemara Loop!

Exploring the Connemara Loop: A Journey Through Ireland’s Wild Beauty

Our day on the Connemara Loop was approached with a flexible itinerary. While we had a clear idea of the major highlights we wanted to visit, we also left room for spontaneity, allowing us to pursue additional sights if time permitted or if a particular spot truly captivated us. This laid-back approach proved perfect for soaking in the varied charm of Connemara.

Our first major stop was the iconic Kylemore Abbey, a must-see landmark on any Connemara itinerary.

Kylemore Abbey: A Jewel in the Connemara Landscape

Kylemore Abbey stands as one of the most popular and visually striking landmarks within the Connemara Loop. Its captivating history adds to its allure. Originally built in 1868 by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy English politician, as a romantic gesture for his beloved wife, Margaret, the estate later underwent several transformations. Tragically, Margaret died young during a trip to Egypt, leading Henry to eventually sell the estate. It was subsequently owned by the Duke and Duchess of Manchester before finding its enduring purpose.

In 1920, the Irish Benedictine Nuns acquired the property, transforming it into a distinguished Catholic boarding school for girls. While the boarding school closed its doors in 2010, the Benedictine community continues to reside at Kylemore, maintaining the estate and its rich heritage. It also felt like one of the more reasonably priced attractions, offering excellent value for the experience.

Hiking Diamond Hill in Connemara National Park

During our drive to Kylemore Abbey, we passed through the stunning landscapes of Connemara National Park. It’s an absolute must to incorporate this natural wonder into your itinerary, whether on your way to or from the Abbey. We chose to visit on our way back and embarked on a memorable hike up Diamond Hill, a prominent feature of the park.

Diamond Hill offers three distinct trails, catering to various fitness levels. We opted for the intermediate trail/loop. Observing those attempting the advanced climb, we quickly realized it was indeed a significant ascent! The wind on the day of our hike was incredibly strong, creating a challenging yet exhilarating experience. It was so blustery that our ears actually hurt from the force of the wind, adding to the wild, untamed feeling of Connemara.

Reaching the summit, the panoramic views were undeniably worth every step and every gust of wind. The vista stretched across the park’s iconic blanket bogs, heathlands, and mountains, with glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. The paths up Diamond Hill are remarkably well-maintained, featuring a mix of gravel trails and some steeper rock steps. If you have any difficulty with heights or stairs, the beginner trail offers a gentler yet equally rewarding experience, still providing fantastic views.

Discovering Clifden Castle and the Sky Road

After our invigorating hike in Connemara National Park, we headed back towards Clifden, the charming town near our hotel. Jason was keen to visit Clifden Castle, an abandoned ruin that promises a unique historical experience. To reach it, you embark on the magnificent Sky Road, an absolute highlight of the Connemara region. This gorgeous, narrow road twists and turns along the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean at every bend. It’s a driving experience not to be missed.

To reach Clifden Castle itself, you must park your car and then embark on a picturesque 20-minute walk. Tucked away on farmland in the hillside, the castle is wonderfully secluded, feeling almost like your own private historical discovery. It offers an intimate glimpse into Ireland’s past, far from the typical tourist crowds.

It’s fascinating that this castle remains a somewhat lesser-known attraction, likely due to its off-the-beaten-path location. The walk itself is an adventure, making you question if you’re truly on the right track, which only adds to its charm. We found some intriguing history about its origins and former inhabitants on Wikipedia, which enriched our appreciation for this hidden gem.

The views along Sky Road are absolutely spectacular! We were incredibly fortunate to have such great weather, allowing the stunning coastal scenery to truly shine under the Irish sun. The rugged cliffs, turquoise waters, and distant islands create a mesmerizing tableau that epitomizes the raw beauty of the Wild Atlantic Way.

An Evening in Charming Clifden

After our captivating exploration of Clifden Castle and the Sky Road, we returned to our hotel to freshen up. Then, it was a quick 15-20 minute drive into the heart of Clifden, the charming capital of Connemara. This picturesque town, known for its vibrant atmosphere and colorful storefronts, was the perfect place to unwind and experience local Irish life.

We immediately popped into a cute coffee shop for an afternoon pick-me-up, savoring the warmth and local chatter. Afterwards, we took a leisurely stroll, admiring the array of boutique stores that line Clifden’s streets. The town offers a wonderful selection of unique shops, perfect for finding a special souvenir or simply enjoying some window shopping.

For dinner, we chose Mitchell’s, a highly-rated seafood restaurant located adjacent to the pink building in the photo above. The seafood was undoubtedly fresh, offering a decent meal that showcased the bounty of the Atlantic. Unfortunately, an older couple seated nearby made rather rude comments about me taking photos, which somewhat dampened the experience. Despite this minor setback, I focused on enjoying the fresh catch and the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant.

To cap off our eventful day, we returned to Ballynahinch Castle and headed straight for the hotel pub. There, we indulged in some delightful dessert and, of course, a quintessential pint of Guinness! When in Ireland, it’s an absolute must to enjoy a perfectly poured stout, reflecting on the day’s incredible adventures.
