Chicago Dining Uncovered

An Unforgettable Foodie’s Guide: Exploring the Best Restaurants in Chicago

Chicago, affectionately known as the “Windy City,” is a vibrant metropolis celebrated for its stunning architecture, rich history, and perhaps most notably, its incredible food scene. As a passionate foodie, I’d long dreamt of exploring the diverse culinary landscape this city has to offer. So, at the end of June, my friends Gina, Brandy, Rachel, and I embarked on an exciting girls’ weekend getaway, ready to dive headfirst into Chicago’s gastronomic delights. What we discovered was a mere “drop in the bucket” of the city’s vast offerings, leaving us craving more and already planning our return. This guide highlights the amazing places we savored, providing you with a delicious roadmap for your own Chicago food adventure!

Alinea: A World-Renowned Culinary Experience

Our Chicago adventure kicked off with an eagerly anticipated visit to Alinea, a name synonymous with experimental fine dining. Gina, Brandy, and I flew in a day early specifically for this experience, and we were thrilled to be joined by Claire. The anticipation was palpable; friends and fellow food enthusiasts had described it as the “meal of a lifetime,” a mind-blowing event that redefined their perception of food. Alinea’s reputation preceded it, having been ranked among the world’s top restaurants (No. 9 in 2014, No. 26 in 2015), setting our expectations incredibly high for a truly transformative culinary journey.

Alinea Restaurant, a world-renowned fine dining experience in Chicago

While the flavors themselves were undeniably inventive and the presentation nothing short of artistic, the overall experience, especially given the significant $300 per person price tag, regrettably fell short of the monumental hype. Chef Grant Achatz’s ability to transform ingredients into beautiful, conceptual creations was evident, showcasing remarkable culinary artistry. However, the experience felt somewhat lacking in substance. We anticipated a more substantial meat offering, yet the menu featured only a single pork belly piece amidst a twelve-course tasting menu, predominantly composed of vegetarian dishes and small, intricate bites. For a meal of this caliber and cost, having previously enjoyed more expansive 18-course experiences elsewhere, three dessert courses out of twelve also felt disproportionate. While it was certainly an “experience,” and an intriguing one at that, I’m genuinely sad to admit I’ve had more satisfying fine dining encounters at places like Roses’s Luxury and Komi in D.C. If you’re considering Alinea for your first foray into world-class fine dining, or if you simply wish to splurge on a unique culinary spectacle, it might still be a fascinating journey. However, for seasoned diners like Jason and me, who have a broader spectrum of high-end restaurants to compare it against, the mind-blowing factor wasn’t quite there.

The Purple Pig: A Charcuterie Lover’s Dream

Before our highly anticipated Alinea dinner, our group, fresh off the plane and famished, made a strategic stop at The Purple Pig. This acclaimed spot is a paradise for lovers of meats, cheeses, and fine wines. Arriving around 3 PM, the restaurant was already bustling, giving us a glimpse into its immense popularity—we could only imagine the dinner hour crowd! Despite knowing we had a big meal ahead, we couldn’t resist sampling a few of their renowned small plates (a decision we later joked we should have leaned into more). The atmosphere was lively, filled with the clinking of glasses and the buzz of happy diners enjoying communal Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

Among our favorites were the crispy pig ears and kale, a surprisingly addictive combination of textures and savory flavors. The pig ears were perfectly rendered, offering a delightful crunch that perfectly complemented the fresh, earthy kale. Another standout was the vibrant beet and goat cheese salad, which offered a refreshing counterpoint with its creamy tang and sweet earthiness. The Purple Pig truly excels in creating shareable, intensely flavorful dishes, making it an ideal spot to kick off any Chicago food tour or simply enjoy a fantastic midday bite. It’s a testament to Chicago’s diverse culinary landscape, offering an experience that is both casual and gourmet.

Eataly Chicago: An Italian Food Wonderland

We struck gold with our hotel’s location, just a short and pleasant walk from Eataly Chicago, a sprawling Italian marketplace and culinary hub that we found ourselves gravitating towards daily. Stepping inside Eataly is like being transported directly to Italy; it’s an immersive experience filled with the aromas of fresh produce, baking bread, cured meats, and brewing coffee. This multi-level gastronomic paradise boasts an incredible array of authentic Italian products, from artisanal pasta and gourmet cheeses to exquisite olive oils and imported wines. Each visit was an adventure, with so much to see, sample, and desire – I confess, I wished I could buy one of everything! The thought of navigating TSA with a suitcase full of Italian delicacies, however, quickly tempered my enthusiasm.

Fresh pasta and pizza for lunch at Eataly Chicago

For lunch one afternoon, we ventured to the second floor, where an array of restaurants and casual eateries offered a taste of Italy. We indulged in perfectly al dente fresh pasta dishes and authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas, each bite bursting with simple yet profound flavors. And, of course, no Italian lunch is complete without a refreshing glass or two of rosé, perfect for a leisurely afternoon of day-drinking and good conversation. The sheer quality and freshness of the ingredients at Eataly truly elevate every dish.

After our delightful meal, we couldn’t resist exploring further. We discovered an entire section dedicated to magnificent cheeses, each one a work of art. Our next essential stop was for gelato – a non-negotiable Italian treat. The coconut gelato was simply unbelievable; its intense, natural flavor was so authentic it felt as though I had just cracked open a fresh coconut. It’s an absolute must-try! We also spotted a dreamy Nutella bar, a haven for chocolate-hazelnut lovers. Alas, we were too pleasantly full from lunch to partake, but it’s definitely high on the list for our next visit. Eataly is more than just a market; it’s a sensory experience and a testament to Italy’s rich culinary heritage right in the heart of Chicago, making it a top contender for where to eat in Chicago for an authentic taste of Italy.

Frontera Grill: A Mexican Culinary Gem by Rick Bayless

For an authentic taste of Mexico, our group headed to Frontera Grill, one of Chef Rick Bayless’s renowned Chicago establishments. Known for his pioneering work in bringing gourmet Mexican cuisine to the American palate, Bayless ensures that Frontera Grill delivers an exceptional dining experience. If you have an appreciation for vibrant, complex Mexican flavors, this place is an absolute must-visit. From the moment we walked in, the lively atmosphere and inviting aromas set the stage for a memorable meal. We honestly didn’t encounter a single dish that wasn’t stellar, a true testament to the kitchen’s consistent quality and dedication to fresh ingredients.

We started with their delicious margaritas, perfectly balanced and refreshing, setting a high bar for the evening. Our strategy was to order a variety of small plates to maximize our tasting experience, and each choice proved to be a winner. A definite highlight was the duck carnitas – an incredibly rich and flavorful dish. While the menu suggested it was portioned for two, it was so generously sized and decadent that four people could easily enjoy it and feel completely satisfied. The slow-cooked duck was tender and succulent, served with warm tortillas and an array of fresh accoutrements, allowing us to build our own perfect tacos. Every bite was an explosion of authentic Mexican flavors, making Frontera Grill an essential stop for anyone seeking the best Mexican food in Chicago.

The Kitchen: Brunch with Blogger Friends

A delightful coincidence during our trip was discovering that the Eat, Write, Retreat conference was taking place the very same weekend in Chicago! This happy accident led to an impromptu reunion with several fellow blogger friends, adding an extra layer of joy to our culinary explorations. For brunch, a fantastic group including Meagan, Brandy, Laura, Gina, Rachel, Erin, Jocelyn, and myself gathered at The Kitchen Chicago. Known for its community-focused approach and commitment to sourcing local ingredients, The Kitchen offered a bright and inviting atmosphere, perfect for a lively morning meal.

The brunch menu at The Kitchen provided a wonderful array of choices, and everything we ordered was incredibly tasty and satisfying. More importantly, it was an absolute blast catching up with everyone, sharing stories, and laughing over delicious food. The camaraderie was infectious, and a significant part of the fun involved capturing all our moments on Snapchat – a platform I proudly introduced and got many of them hooked on! The Kitchen proved to be not just a place for great food, but a wonderful setting for connecting with friends, making it a memorable stop on our Chicago food tour.

Girl and the Goat: The Unanimous Favorite

Without a shadow of a doubt, Girl and the Goat was the pinnacle of my Chicago dining experiences. This restaurant not only met but exceeded every expectation, single-handedly making up for any disappointment we felt at Alinea. From the moment we walked into the buzzing, rustic-chic space, the energy was electric, promising a meal to remember. Every single dish that graced our table was nothing short of amazing, a harmonious blend of innovative flavors and comforting textures. Chef Stephanie Izard’s approach to cuisine is bold, playful, and deeply satisfying, transforming seemingly simple ingredients into extraordinary culinary creations.

Grilled green beans, surprisingly amazing, at Girl and the Goat Chicago

Perhaps the most astonishing revelation of the evening was the grilled green beans. Who would have thought that a vegetable dish could steal the show and become one of my absolute favorites? If someone had told me at the beginning of the meal, I would have laughed. Yet, these green beans were phenomenal – charred to perfection, bursting with unexpected savory and umami notes. They were so good, in fact, that Brandy later recreated them, and I’m 100% adding her recipe to my dinner rotation soon! We were joined for this incredible dinner by Laura, who, despite having visited Girl and the Goat before, was delighted by the seasonal menu’s fresh offerings, finding new dishes that weren’t available during her previous visit. This constantly evolving menu is a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to freshness and creativity, ensuring a unique experience with every visit.

After an array of savory masterpieces, we couldn’t possibly skip dessert. Despite being wonderfully full, the dessert menu was too tempting to resist, providing a sweet and satisfying conclusion to an utterly phenomenal meal. Girl and the Goat firmly establishes itself as a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the best food Chicago has to offer, showcasing innovative American cuisine in a truly unforgettable setting.

Authentic Deep Dish Pizza: Pequod’s Pizza

When in Chicago, eating deep dish pizza isn’t just an option; it’s a sacred culinary rite of passage. But heed my warning: steer clear of the obvious tourist traps that litter the city center. For an authentic, truly phenomenal deep-dish experience, you absolutely must venture slightly outside the downtown bustle. Trust me, Uber will be your best friend this weekend. Our destination of choice, highly recommended by locals as the “jackpot” of deep-dish pizza places, was Pequod’s Pizza. Located approximately 20-25 minutes from the city center, the short trek is not just worth it—it’s utterly essential for a true taste of Chicago. Pequod’s is famed for its unique caramelized crust, a savory, crispy edge that sets it apart from all others and elevates the entire pizza experience.

Just one glance at the photo below should convince you. The thick, bubbling layer of rich tomato sauce, generously melted cheese, and your chosen toppings, all encased in that inimitable caramelized crust, creates a masterpiece of flavor and texture. It’s a hearty, soul-satisfying pizza that embodies everything wonderful about Chicago’s iconic dish. The depth of flavor, the perfect balance of ingredients, and that signature crispy, cheesy crust make Pequod’s an unforgettable culinary highlight. Skipping this local gem for a lesser, more tourist-focused option would be a disservice to your taste buds. For arguably the best deep dish pizza in Chicago, Pequod’s is the undisputed champion.

Siena Tavern: Italian Delights by Fabio Viviani

Our Chicago food tour continued with a delightful visit to Siena Tavern, the acclaimed restaurant by Top Chef contestant Fabio Viviani. Known for its energetic ambiance and upscale Italian fare, Siena Tavern promised a sophisticated yet inviting dining experience. We began our meal with some of their most popular shared appetizers. The fried dough, which had a more eloquent Italian name than my casual description, was a revelation—light, airy, and perfectly seasoned, it was an irresistible start. Then came the burrata, an absolute must-try. Siena Tavern boasts a dedicated mozzarella bar, allowing diners to either order a lavish assortment or select individual fresh cheeses. Still somewhat sated from our earlier deep-dish pizza feast, we opted for just the burrata, a choice that proved to be excellent with its creamy interior and fresh, delicate flavor.

Apparently, our earlier pizza indulgence hadn’t quite curbed our collective love for carbs, as we each decided on a pasta dish (with Brandy and Gina generously sharing one). The variety was wonderful, but I must confidently say that my choice was the winner: a pasta dish featuring delectable prosciutto sausage. The savory depth of the prosciutto perfectly complemented the expertly prepared pasta, creating a truly satisfying and memorable main course. Siena Tavern excels in crafting modern Italian dishes that pay homage to tradition while adding a contemporary twist.

Remarkably, despite our earlier culinary adventures, we still found room for dessert, proving that there’s always space for something sweet and extraordinary. We indulged in an exquisite ice cream flight, allowing us to sample a variety of rich and creative flavors. To fuel up for our late-night architecture tour, cappuccinos were a necessity, providing a perfect warm, comforting finish. The absolute highlight, however, was their ingenious donuts, which arrived with a selection of fillings—jelly, caramel, or chocolate—allowing us to customize each bite. This interactive dessert was pure bliss, a truly amazing end to a fantastic meal. Siena Tavern provides a sophisticated yet fun Italian dining experience, making it a great option for a delicious dinner in Chicago.

And there you have it – a comprehensive recap of our incredible culinary journey over four days in the magnificent city of Chicago! From the ambitious artistry of Alinea to the comforting authenticity of Pequod’s deep-dish, and the vibrant flavors of Girl and the Goat, Chicago proved to be a true foodie paradise. Each restaurant offered a unique taste and experience, solidifying the city’s reputation as a world-class dining destination. While this trip was certainly a feast, stay tuned for Part 2, where I’ll share how we balanced all this delicious eating with staying active and exploring the “Windy City” beyond its plates. Because, as much as I love to cozy up with good food, staying active while on vacation is an absolute must to feel energized and make the most of every moment. Until then, happy eating!
