Gather Your Ingredients for Thanksgiving in a Blanket

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the fact that it utilizes ingredients you likely already have on hand. Here’s what you’ll need to create these holiday-inspired bites:

  • Crescent Roll Dough: To keep things super simple and quick, opt for store-bought crescent roll dough in a tube. Its flaky texture and buttery taste are the perfect wrapper for our festive fillings.
  • Mashed Potatoes: Whether you prefer classic creamy mashed potatoes or a more flavorful garlic mashed potatoes, they’ll add a delightful, comforting base to each roll. Ensure they are not too watery for optimal rolling.
  • Stuffing: Because what’s Thanksgiving without stuffing? This ingredient provides essential savory notes and a satisfying texture. Feel free to use your favorite homemade stuffing or a convenient boxed mix.
  • Shredded Turkey: The star of the show! Use any leftover shredded turkey – both white and dark meat work wonderfully. Aim for moist, tender pieces to ensure each bite is succulent.
  • Cranberry Sauce: A dollop of cranberry sauce adds a crucial touch of sweetness and tartness, cutting through the richness of the other ingredients. Don’t hesitate to use the canned variety; I promise, no judgment here!
  • Turkey Gravy: Essential for both the filling and, most importantly, for dunking! You can whip up your own homemade gravy or use a high-quality instant mix. It will be tasty either way and adds that quintessential Thanksgiving flavor.
  • Unsalted Butter: Melted butter is brushed over the rolls before baking, ensuring a beautiful golden finish and enhancing that irresistible buttery flavor. Unsalted butter is recommended to give you control over the overall sodium content of the dish.

Crafting Your Thanksgiving in a Blanket: Step-by-Step

Making these appetizers is straightforward and enjoyable. Follow these steps for perfect, golden-brown rolls every time:

Equipment You’ll Need:

  • Large rimmed baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Small bowl (for melted butter)
  • Pastry brush (optional, for butter)

Detailed Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (191°C). Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup. This step is crucial for achieving evenly baked rolls.
  2. Assemble the First Roll: Carefully unroll one package of crescent dough and separate the triangles. Lay one crescent roll triangle flat on your prepared surface.
  3. Layer the Fillings: Starting with the wider end of the triangle, spread about 1-2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes on the lower half. Follow with 1-2 tablespoons of stuffing, spreading it gently over the potatoes. Next, add approximately 2 tablespoons of shredded turkey. Finish with a small teaspoon of cranberry sauce and another teaspoon of turkey gravy right in the center. The cranberry sauce acts as a delicious flavor anchor, similar to how mayo enhances a sandwich.
  4. Roll and Seal: Carefully roll the crescent dough from the wider end towards the pointed tip, gently tucking in any ingredients that might try to escape from the sides. Once rolled, press the end of the triangle gently against the dough to seal it, ensuring the fillings remain secure during baking.
  5. Repeat the Process: Place the finished roll on your prepared baking sheet. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the remaining 7 rolls from the first package, spacing them evenly on the sheet.
  6. Butter and Bake (First Batch): Once all 8 rolls are assembled, lightly brush the tops of each roll with the melted unsalted butter. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful light golden brown and appear flaky. The exact time may vary based on your oven.
  7. Cool Slightly: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the rolls cool for about 5 minutes on the pan. This allows them to set slightly before transferring them to a wire rack to cool fully.
  8. Complete the Second Batch: Repeat the entire process (steps 2 through 7) with the second package of crescent roll dough and any remaining filling ingredients.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Serve your Thanksgiving in a Blanket rolls warm, ideally with a generous bowl of additional turkey gravy for dipping. A sprinkle of fresh minced parsley or chives makes for a lovely garnish, adding freshness and color.

Expert Tips for Perfect Thanksgiving in a Blanket Rolls

Achieving the perfect Thanksgiving in a Blanket is easy with a few simple tricks:

  • Spread Evenly and Thinly: When layering your ingredients, aim for an even, relatively thin spread. Overfilling can make rolling difficult and cause ingredients to burst out during baking. If some bits fall out, simply tuck them back in gently through the sides as you roll.
  • Cranberry Sauce First (Like Mayo): Start by spreading the cranberry sauce on the dough first, much like you would spread mayonnaise on a sandwich. This creates a barrier, helps distribute the flavor evenly, and keeps the other, drier ingredients from crumbling out.
  • Secure the Roll: When you reach the pointed end of the crescent triangle, gently press it against the dough to seal the roll tightly. This prevents it from unraveling in the oven and keeps all those delicious fillings contained.
  • Avoid Over-Moisture: While gravy is added inside, ensure your mashed potatoes and stuffing aren’t excessively wet, as this can make the crescent dough soggy. If they seem too moist, you can gently pat them with a paper towel before using.
  • Don’t Forget the Butter Brush: Brushing the tops of the rolls with melted butter before baking is key to achieving that beautiful golden-brown color and irresistible flaky crust.

Serving Suggestions: Elevate Your Appetizers

These savory blankets are best served warm, allowing their flavors to truly meld and the crescent dough to remain delightfully flaky. Here are some ideas to make them shine:

  • Classic Gravy Dip: The absolute must-have! Offer a small bowl of warm turkey gravy alongside the rolls for dipping.
  • Fresh Herb Garnish: A sprinkle of fresh minced chives or parsley not only adds a pop of color but also a fresh herbaceous note that complements the rich fillings.
  • Cranberry Sauce on the Side: For those who love extra tang, a small dish of additional cranberry sauce makes a great dipping alternative.
  • Appetizer Platter: Arrange them beautifully on a platter with other festive finger foods for a holiday gathering. They are perfect for football watch parties or casual get-togethers.
  • Miniature Meal: Serve alongside a light green salad for a quick and satisfying post-holiday lunch.

Storage and Freezing Instructions

Planning ahead or dealing with even more leftovers? Here’s how to properly store and reheat your Thanksgiving in a Blanket appetizers:

How long will these blankets stay fresh?

Once cooled, store these Thanksgiving in a Blanket appetizers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For best results when reheating, always use the oven or a toaster oven, not the microwave. The microwave will cause the flaky crescent dough to become soggy, ruining the texture.

Can you freeze this?

Yes, you can freeze these delicious rolls after they have been baked and fully cooled. I highly recommend against freezing them with raw dough, as the texture can suffer upon baking. To freeze, arrange the cooled rolls in a single layer on a baking sheet and flash-freeze for about an hour until solid. Then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container, separated by parchment paper, for up to 1-2 months.

To reheat from frozen, simply pop them into a toaster oven or conventional oven preheated to 325°F (160°C) for 10-15 minutes, or until they are heated through and the crust is crisp again. Again, avoid using the microwave for reheating to maintain their delightful texture.

Creative Variations and Customizations

Feeling adventurous? These rolls are incredibly versatile and open to creative twists:

  • Add Cheese: A sprinkle of shredded cheddar, mozzarella, or provolone inside the roll can add an extra layer of flavor and melty goodness.
  • Extra Herbs: Incorporate fresh sage, thyme, or rosemary into your mashed potatoes or stuffing for an even more aromatic profile.
  • Sweet Potato Swap: If you have leftover sweet potato casserole (without marshmallows!), try substituting it for some of the mashed potatoes for a different flavor dimension.
  • Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the turkey or a dash of hot sauce to the gravy for those who enjoy a little heat.
  • Vegetarian Option: For a meat-free alternative, use a plant-based turkey substitute or load up on extra veggie stuffing and mashed potatoes.
