Austin, Texas Ultimate Travel Guide: What to Do, Eat, and See (Part 1)

During my birthday weekend at the end of January, my partner Jason and I embarked on an exciting adventure to Austin, Texas! The city has long been lauded for its dynamic culture, incredible food scene, and incredibly welcoming atmosphere. We’d consistently heard glowing recommendations about Austin’s culinary prowess and its laid-back charm, making it a top contender for our travel wishlist. And for any fan of the critically acclaimed TV show, Friday Night Lights, knowing it was filmed there simply sealed the deal – as if we needed another compelling reason to visit this captivating city.

The consistent buzz around Austin – from the friendliness of its locals and its easy navigability to its vibrant cultural tapestry and unique vibe – truly painted an irresistible picture. I’m thrilled to confirm that all these wonderful attributes are incredibly accurate! Austin truly captured my heart. While our three-day trip allowed us to only scratch the surface of its extensive culinary offerings, we certainly savored every moment. The sheer abundance of outstanding eateries means a return visit is inevitable, and next time, we definitely plan to extend our exploration to San Antonio, which is just an hour south and boasts its own incredible food scene.

To give you the most comprehensive overview of our experience, I’ve divided our Austin journey into three detailed parts. Today, you’re diving into “Austin, Texas: What to Do, What to Eat, What to See: Part 1.” This initial installment chronicles Jason’s and my carefully curated itinerary, a blend of invaluable recommendations from friends and our own meticulous research, culminating in our personalized schedule of must-see attractions, engaging activities, and unforgettable dining experiences. Part 2, which I consider my favorite, will take you on an exhilarating Rocket Electrics foodie tour of the city, offering an authentic local perspective on Austin’s best culinary hidden gems. Expect a full report on that on Wednesday! Finally, Part 3 will conclude our series by revealing our ideal downtown accommodation – a location that epitomizes convenience and comfort, and one I wholeheartedly recommend for anyone visiting the remarkable city of Austin.

Now, without further delay, let’s allow the vibrant imagery to transport you directly to the heart of Austin, Texas!

Relive the Drama: A Friday Night Lights Driving Tour in Austin

To fully immerse ourselves in all the experiences Austin had to offer, we opted to rent a car, a decision that proved invaluable for reaching many of our desired destinations. As devoted fans of Friday Night Lights, a pilgrimage to the iconic filming locations was a non-negotiable part of our trip. Below, you’ll see photos of the actual homes of Coach Eric and Tami Taylor, the legendary Tim Riggins (my eternal hall pass boyfriend!), and Matt Saracen. Stepping onto these streets felt incredibly nostalgic, bringing back a flood of memories from the show – I half-wished the actors were still there, ready to deliver a motivational “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose!”

The convenience of the locations was a pleasant surprise; Coach Taylor’s and Tim Riggins’ houses were actually just a short drive from each other, making for a quick and easy stop. Saracen’s house was only an additional 10 minutes away, showcasing how centrally located many of these fictional Dillon, Texas, landmarks truly are within Austin. While we focused on the main character’s homes, there are many other FNL sites you could explore. We opted not to visit places like the Landing Strip (though we unknowingly drove right past it near the airport), East Dillon High, or the Panther Fieldhouse during this trip, but for fellow enthusiasts eager to recreate the magic, here’s a comprehensive list of addresses for your own self-guided Friday Night Lights tour:

Start Your Day Right: Jo’s Coffee, an Austin Favorite

No trip to Austin is complete without a stop at Jo’s Coffee. With multiple locations across the city, we visited the one on 2nd Street, and it completely lived up to its hype. Every local and fellow traveler I spoke with enthusiastically recommended Jo’s, and for good reason! Their coffee is exceptionally well-made, boasting rich flavors that truly awaken the senses. Beyond the excellent brews, their food menu offers delicious options perfect for a quick breakfast or a light snack. The vibrant atmosphere and friendly service make it more than just a coffee shop; it’s a quintessential Austin experience. Explore History and Grandeur: The Texas State Capitol

One of the true advantages of our chosen accommodation was its incredible proximity to the magnificent Texas State Capitol. We could literally spot the dome from our hotel room, and it was just a leisurely stroll away. Eager to soak up some much-needed sunshine after the cold and dreary weather back in DC, we took the opportunity to walk over and explore. It turned out to be a truly beautiful day, perfect for appreciating the grandeur of this historic landmark. The Texas State Capitol is an architectural marvel, recognized as the largest state capitol building in the United States, even taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Its distinctive pink granite facade is truly stunning. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about Texas history and government, or simply enjoy a self-guided walk through the impressive rotunda, legislative chambers, and the surrounding manicured grounds. The peaceful atmosphere and rich history make it a must-visit for anyone interested in American heritage and impressive architecture.

How could we possibly visit Austin without stopping at the legendary Gordough’s? This iconic donut establishment is practically a pilgrimage site for anyone with a sweet tooth, famous for its extravagant, over-the-top creations. Gordough’s isn’t just a donut shop; it’s an experience, turning simple donuts into decadent works of art. From savory to sweet, their menu is full of inventive toppings and combinations that push the boundaries of traditional donut offerings. Each donut is massive, freshly fried, and loaded with an incredible array of ingredients – think bacon, fried chicken, fruit, and every kind of candy or sauce imaginable. Sharing is often recommended, but I won’t judge if you try to tackle one solo! It’s the perfect indulgent treat after exploring the city.

If you’re seeking an authentic Texas BBQ experience, a visit to Salt Lick BBQ is absolutely non-negotiable. Located about 40 minutes southwest of Austin in Driftwood, it’s not easily accessible without a car, but believe me, the scenic drive is part of the adventure and absolutely worth every minute. Brunch & Boutique Bliss: South Congress Cafe and SoCo Shopping

Address: 1600 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704

For an unforgettable brunch experience, look no further than South Congress Cafe. If you plan to dine here, which I enthusiastically recommend, make sure to set aside at least 90 minutes afterward to explore the eclectic and vibrant South Congress Avenue. This iconic street, often affectionately called “SoCo,” is a living embodiment of Austin’s unique “Keep Austin Weird” ethos. On weekends, the avenue comes alive with pop-up tents featuring local artists selling their handcrafted goods, adding to the already bustling energy. South Congress Avenue is truly a spectacle, with its colorful murals, quirky shops, and constant buzz of activity. You’ll find a delightful array of unique boutiques, vintage stores, and even a really cool antique shop that we enjoyed browsing. If you need a mid-shopping energy boost, another convenient Jo’s Coffee location is also situated right on this lively strip!

An Unforgettable Culinary Journey: Fine Dining at Uchiko

Address: 4200 N Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78756

For aficionados of exceptional sushi and contemporary Japanese cuisine, a reservation at Uchiko or its sister restaurant, Uchi, is an absolute must – even in the heart of Texas! You truly can’t go wrong with either, as both consistently deliver an extraordinary dining experience. Uchi is the original, more intimate establishment, specializing in inventive contemporary Japanese sushi, while Uchiko, its “farmhouse” sibling, offers a slightly larger space and a menu that leans towards modern Japanese farmhouse cooking with a refined touch. Deciding between the two was genuinely difficult, but after polling friends, an overwhelming majority (8 out of 10!) recommended Uchiko. We secured our reservation there for my birthday dinner, and it proved to be an utterly sublime experience, well worth every penny. The ambiance, the impeccable service, and most importantly, the masterful dishes made for a truly memorable celebration.

This next experience was incredibly unique and utterly captivating. We ordered the sear-your-own wagyu beef, which arrived as thinly sliced, premium wagyu accompanied by a superheated Japanese river rock. The interactive element of cooking the delicate beef ourselves, directly at the table, was not only fun but also ensured each piece was cooked to our exact preference. Omg, the resulting flavor was beyond amazing – it literally melted in your mouth, tasting like pure butter. A truly unforgettable culinary moment!

To our delight, this lovely birthday dessert was presented to us on the house. It was such a thoughtful and sweet gesture from the Uchiko team, making my birthday dinner even more special!

And for the grand finale, their most popular dessert – the fried milk! This unique and incredibly delicious creation is an absolute must-try when you visit. It’s unlike anything you’ve had before, a perfect blend of creamy and crispy textures. Seriously, you HAVE to order it!

Savoring the Last Sips: Caffé Medici

Address: 200 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701

Before heading to the airport, we made sure to grab a final taste of Austin at Caffé Medici. This charming coffee shop came highly recommended on Yelp, boasting excellent reviews, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. We were in search of a cute coffee shop that offered both great coffee and a welcoming ambiance, and Caffé Medici delivered on all fronts. I ordered a perfectly crafted latte, and we indulged in some delicious croissants, savoring those last moments in the city. What sets Caffé Medici apart is its inviting atmosphere, including a cozy upstairs area where you can relax, get some work done, or simply enjoy extended conversations with friends over expertly brewed coffee. It was the ideal spot for a leisurely start to our travel day, leaving us with a warm and pleasant final impression of Austin.
