Borough Market: London’s Iconic Foodie Paradise

No trip to London is complete without a visit to Borough Market. This isn’t just a market; it’s a sensory feast, a vibrant hub of culinary excellence, and an absolute must-do for any food enthusiast. Forget about making lunch or dinner plans elsewhere – simply dedicate three to four hours to exploring this historic market, and you’ll leave with a thoroughly satisfied palate and a full belly. The sheer variety of delicious nibbles, gourmet delights, and international street food is truly endless. If only we lived in London, we’d be here every weekend, soaking in the atmosphere and sampling new treats!

Monmouth Coffee at Borough Market - A bustling queue for fresh coffee

Right across from the main entrance of Borough Market lies Monmouth Coffee, an institution for coffee lovers and a definitive ‘must-hit’ spot. As avid fans of a quality brew, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try it. We arrived at a fortuitous time; though there was a queue, it hadn’t yet snaked around the block as it famously does. Don’t let the line deter you; the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans and the promise of an expertly crafted cup make it entirely worth the wait for one of the best coffees in London.

Speaking of things we love, a bar like this – overflowing with exquisite cheeses – is absolutely our kind of place! Borough Market is a treasure trove of artisanal products, from freshly baked bread and vibrant organic produce to an incredible selection of international foods and, of course, cheese. The market’s energy is infectious, with vendors passionately showcasing their goods and visitors excitedly sampling everything on offer. It’s a true celebration of food, reflecting London’s diverse culinary landscape.

When at Borough Market, you absolutely *have* to get these donuts. The one in the front, bursting with a creamy vanilla custard, is pure bliss. The one in the back, a salted caramel donut adorned with a golden honeycomb, is equally divine. And no, that’s not fried chicken sticking out of it – it’s a delightful piece of crunchy honeycomb, adding a wonderful texture and sweetness! These aren’t just donuts; they’re works of art, a perfect example of the innovative and delicious treats you’ll find throughout the market.

It was fantastic to meet up with my good friend, Erin, who recently moved to London! She has a wonderful blog (erinmareemucha.com) where she shares her experiences and tips for exploring the city. We loved catching up amidst the vibrant chaos of the market. Borough Market isn’t just about food; it’s about community, discovery, and connecting with people.

One of the most famous and highly recommended stalls is Brindisa, renowned for its legendary chorizo and roasted red pepper sandwich. This sandwich is an absolute masterpiece of flavors and textures – savory, smoky chorizo perfectly complemented by sweet, tender roasted peppers, all nestled within crusty bread. It was an utterly delightful experience, and a definitive must-try when exploring the market. Borough Market truly showcases London’s prowess as a global food capital, offering everything from quick bites to gourmet ingredients.

Wagamama: A Reliable Noodle Fix in London

While Wagamama has expanded globally, with locations even in the States, we don’t have one in the DC area (yet!). So, when we spotted this popular Pan-Asian restaurant near the Tower of London on our very first day – utterly famished after hopping off the plane – it was an easy choice. Wagamama is celebrated for its fresh, flavorful ramen and noodle dishes, offering a consistent and satisfying dining experience. We opted for their delectable duck potstickers, which had an incredible depth of flavor, reminiscent of authentic Peking duck. It’s a fantastic spot for a casual, delicious meal, especially when you’re craving comforting noodles or a quick, tasty bite after a day of sightseeing.

Nopi: A Sophisticated Culinary Experience for a Special Occasion

Our London trip was largely a celebration of Jason’s 30th birthday, and for a truly special dinner, I made reservations at Nopi, one of renowned chef Yotam Ottolenghi’s acclaimed restaurants. A huge thanks to Kathryn for this fantastic suggestion! Nopi perfectly embodies Ottolenghi’s distinctive culinary philosophy, blending Middle Eastern and Asian flavors with a focus on fresh, vibrant ingredients and bold spices. Jason and I enjoyed an absolutely delicious meal here, savoring every thoughtfully crafted dish. The restaurant’s elegant, contemporary ambiance provided the perfect setting for a celebratory evening. We wholeheartedly recommend Nopi for anyone seeking a sophisticated and unforgettable dining experience in London. Its prime location near Piccadilly Circus and Regent Street allowed us to enjoy a beautiful post-dinner stroll, admiring the iconic streets sparkling under the evening lights – a truly gorgeous sight!

The English Tea Room at The Brown’s Hotel: A Quintessential Afternoon Tea Experience

It was in London that I truly fell head over heels in love with the timeless tradition of afternoon tea. While London offers countless venues for this cherished ritual, we were lucky enough to receive a stellar recommendation from Jason’s cousin, who used to live in the city: afternoon tea at The English Tea Room at The Brown’s Hotel. This iconic hotel provides a setting of unparalleled elegance and old-world charm, making for an absolutely perfect afternoon. Be sure to make reservations well in advance, as this popular spot fills up quickly!

The experience at Brown’s is nothing short of magical. Imagine delicate finger sandwiches with classic fillings, warm, freshly baked scones served with generous dollops of clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam, and an array of exquisite pastries – all accompanied by a selection of fine teas. It’s a leisurely affair, steeped in history and refinement, providing a delightful respite from the bustling city outside. We indulged in a variety of traditional teas, though our experiment with a hibiscus herbal tea proved that sometimes sticking to the classics is best for an authentic afternoon tea experience!

Oh my goodness, the clotted cream here is simply heavenly! I’m still dreaming about it and am now on a mission to find a comparable version back home to spread on absolutely everything. And their real strawberry jam? Unbelievable! The rich, thick cream paired with the sweet, fruity jam on a warm scone is a culinary experience that defines British elegance. You absolutely must try it. This afternoon tea was truly a highlight of our London food journey.

The Clarence: A Quintessential British Pub Experience

Later that evening, we decided to embrace the classic London pub experience. After a leisurely stroll through the beautifully lit city at night, we settled into The Clarence, a wonderfully authentic local pub nestled near Trafalgar Square. You simply can’t visit London without stepping into a proper pub! We savored traditional fish and chips, perfectly crispy and flavorful, alongside a selection of local brews. It was a relaxed and enjoyable date night, offering a genuine taste of British culture. And with all the walking we did that day, we definitely earned those calories!

Duck and Waffle: Dining with a View High Above London

Located in the iconic Heron Tower, the journey itself is part of the adventure: you ascend 40 stories in a clear glass elevator, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city as you climb. Once at the top, you’re greeted with an incredible vista of London, a magnificent backdrop for your meal. For my meal, I indulged in the delightful apple toffee waffles, generously topped with a scoop of creamy cinnamon ice cream. Yes, dessert for breakfast – and I wouldn’t have it any other way! It was a perfect blend of sweet, warm, and comforting flavors, a truly decadent start to the day. Dishoom: The Unforgettable Best Meal in London

Now, let’s talk about the culinary pinnacle of our London trip: Dishoom. This next place housed the **BEST MEAL** we had in London, hands down. I simply cannot stop raving about it, and I won’t. We were absolutely, unequivocally in love with this restaurant. It has since sparked a fervent determination in me to find the best Indian restaurant in the DC area, hoping to recapture just a fraction of the magic we experienced here. Dishoom, located in the vibrant Covent Garden area, is more than just a restaurant; it’s a culinary revelation that proves London truly has some of the very best Indian food outside of India.

The moment you step inside, Dishoom’s decor transports you. Inspired by the old Irani cafés of Bombay, the interior evokes a sense of nostalgic elegance, subtly reminiscent of the ‘Great Gatsby’ era in its sophisticated yet bustling atmosphere. There’s a cozy bar downstairs where you can wait for your table, which has a distinct speakeasy feel to it – a wonderfully atmospheric spot for a pre-dinner drink or some nibbles. While Dishoom doesn’t take reservations (which often leads to a queue), we only waited about 20 minutes, and the time flew by, especially with drinks in hand. Trust me, it is so incredibly WORTH the wait. Ugh, I miss this place already, and thinking about it makes my mouth water!

We ordered a feast: their fluffy garlic naan, aromatic vegetable biryani, the legendary House Black Daal (a truly holy mouth explosion of awesomeness – I honestly could have just drank it, it was that good!), perfectly spiced gunpowder potatoes, and the rich chicken ruby curry. It was a ton of food, but goodness gracious, every single bite was an experience. The flavors were profound, comforting, and perfectly balanced. The daal, slow-cooked to perfection, was creamy and incredibly complex, a revelation. The chicken ruby curry offered a rich, slightly sweet, and savory depth that paired beautifully with the fragrant biryani. This entire meal was a testament to London’s outstanding Indian culinary scene, and Dishoom stands out as a jewel. Love, love, love this place! It’s a definite must-visit for anyone exploring the best food in London.
