However, even the most cherished routines can take an unforeseen turn, transforming a regular evening into a terrifying ordeal. This is the story of Winston’s recent, harrowing accident and his brave journey through an unexpected surgery and recovery.

The Fateful Evening: An Accident That Changed Everything

It was a typical Friday evening, following the exact routine we’ve maintained since Winston first joined our family. As the day wound down, Winston, usually quite exhausted from his daily adventures, would often need a little help navigating the stairs for his final potty break before bedtime. My husband, Jason, would gently carry him down, ensuring he was tucked safely into his crate for the night. This particular Friday, however, broke our cherished routine in the most heart-wrenching way.

As Jason carefully descended the stairs with Winston cradled in his arms, a sudden, horrifying slip occurred. Both Jason and Winston tumbled down a few steps. The way Jason was holding Winston, combined with the fall, meant that Winston’s hind right leg bore the brunt of the impact as it struck the hard stairs. After what seemed like endless waiting, examinations, and X-rays, the initial diagnosis came in: Winston had fractured his fibula. The immediate plan was to fit him with a splint for a week. While this news was certainly concerning, we held onto the hope that it might be a relatively straightforward recovery. We were already $600 poorer, but relief washed over us, thinking this was the extent of it.

However, as is often the case with our spirited Winston, things rarely go as simply as planned. The attending veterinarian, after reviewing the X-rays more closely, raised a more serious concern. He suspected that the fall might have not only fractured the fibula but also affected a growth plate in Winston’s tibia. To be absolutely certain, he recommended sending the X-rays to a specialist radiologist for a more definitive interpretation.

This particular type of fracture extends through the growth plate and into the joint, making it more complex and requiring immediate surgical intervention to ensure proper healing and prevent long-term complications. The urgency was clear; we were advised to see an orthopedic surgeon immediately and to schedule surgery as soon as possible, ideally before the fracture began to heal naturally in a compromised position.

The devastating news arrived on a weekend, which meant we had to endure an agonizing wait until Monday morning to contact an orthopedic specialist. The weekend dragged by, each moment filled with anxiety for our little boy. First thing Monday, we made the call, and thankfully, we were able to secure a consultation for Tuesday morning. The orthopedic surgeon confirmed, yet again, the critical need for immediate surgery. We had been mentally preparing ourselves since Monday, having been informed over the phone that the doctor might opt for same-day surgery if a slot was available. And indeed, on Tuesday morning, we left the clinic, our hearts heavy, without our beloved Winston, as he was taken in for his operation.

Winston’s Big Day: Surgery and an Unexpected Discovery

Winston underwent surgery for approximately three grueling hours on Tuesday. The orthopedic team worked diligently, and thankfully, everything went very well. The surgeon explained that the fracture above his tibia, where the growth plate is located, proved to be slightly more complex than initially anticipated, which accounted for the longer surgical time. To ensure the bones would heal correctly and prevent any bowing or deformity as he grew, cross pins were meticulously placed to secure the fractured sections in perfect alignment.

A silver lining in this challenging situation is that Winston has largely completed his vertical growth. This means the risk of significant leg length discrepancies or severe bowing, often a major concern with growth plate fractures in very young puppies, is considerably reduced. His future mobility and comfort look promising, largely thanks to the timely and precise surgical repair.

As if leg surgery wasn’t enough, during his time under anesthesia, we also seized the opportunity to address another long-standing health matter: his neutering. Winston is cryptorchid, meaning one of his testicles had not descended. Prior to the accident, our regular vet and we had decided to postpone his neutering, hoping the undescended testicle might eventually drop on its own. However, given the necessity of putting him under general anesthesia for his leg, we made the practical decision to “kill two birds with one stone,” as the saying goes. There was no point in subjecting him to anesthesia twice within such a short period. So, in addition to his intricate leg repair, our brave little Winston also underwent his neuter procedure.

The Road to Recovery: Hope and Dedication

Despite the complexity of his injuries and procedures, the long-term prognosis for Winston is wonderfully positive. He is expected to make a full recovery and live a normal, pain-free life! The primary concern with any joint manipulation like this is the potential for an earlier onset of arthritis down the road. However, by addressing the fracture with such precision and promptness, we have significantly increased his chances of maintaining excellent joint health for many years to come.

Winston’s recovery journey is estimated to be 6-8 weeks. For the first week, he will be in a splint to stabilize the leg. After that initial week, he will be allowed to gradually start putting gentle weight on the leg and walking, though strenuous activities like running or long walks will be strictly prohibited. The reasoning behind this gradual approach is crucial: the veterinary team wants to prevent joint stiffness and encourage the restoration of his full range of motion as quickly and safely as possible. Gentle, controlled movement aids in healing and strengthens the surrounding muscles.

A relief for us is that all his incisions were closed with internal stitches, meaning there won’t be any external sutures for him to pick at or chew. This simplifies his post-operative care, though the infamous “cone of shame” (an e-collar) is still a necessary accessory to prevent him from licking his incisions excessively. Thankfully, Winston is quite tolerant of his soft e-collar, often using it as a convenient pillow for naps – a small comfort during his recovery!

Homecoming, Challenges, and Unconditional Love

We are absolutely overjoyed (and admittedly, a little nervous) as we prepare to pick Winston up around noon today! We can’t wait to smother his adorable little puppy face with snuggles. He’ll likely still be a bit groggy and “dopey” from the anesthesia, but our hope is that his recovery at home will be swift and comfortable. The timing, however, presents an interesting challenge: a massive snowstorm is predicted to hit our area on Friday and Saturday, with projections of up to two feet of snow! This means the entire region will likely be shut down, making potty breaks a significant undertaking. Jason is already preparing for round-the-clock shoveling duty to ensure Winston has a clear path for his essential outings.

This entire ordeal – the accident, the emergency visits, the multiple diagnoses, and the intricate surgery – certainly threw us for a loop. It also left us approximately $5000 poorer, a stark reminder of the unforeseen costs of pet ownership, even with the best intentions and preventive care. Yet, without a shadow of a doubt, we would never trade Winston for anything. The love, joy, and companionship he brings into our lives are immeasurable.
