An Epicurean and Scenic Escape: Discovering the Hudson River Valley’s Best
The Labor Day weekend offered the perfect excuse for an unforgettable road trip to the picturesque Hudson River Valley in upstate New York. My husband, Jason, and I ventured north to reunite with our wonderful blogging friends, Gina and Brandy. Our primary mission? To experience the legendary Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a culinary landmark that captured our imagination after watching Dan Barber’s feature on Netflix’s Chef’s Table. Beyond this gastronomic pilgrimage, the trip was a fantastic opportunity for me, a first-timer to upstate New York, to immerse myself in the region’s charm and connect with dear friends.
The Hudson River Valley proved to be a treasure trove of culinary delights and natural beauty, far exceeding my expectations of what New York had to offer beyond the bustling city. What a privilege it must be for Gina and Brandy to live so close to the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Hyde Park! The sheer accessibility of their cafes and restaurants to the public is incredible, allowing anyone to stroll in and savor the creations of future culinary masters. Our first morning brunch at the CIA was a testament to this, setting a high bar for the epicurean adventures that lay ahead.
A Culinary Immersion at the Prestigious Culinary Institute of America

Our initial culinary stop took us to the Apple Pie Bakery Cafe at the CIA, an experience that truly felt like stepping into a pastry wonderland. The aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air, instantly stimulating our appetites. We found ourselves tempted to order one of everything, and in a way, we almost did! Our table was soon laden with an impressive spread, showcasing the students’ incredible talent. While I managed to resist the urge to devour every single dessert, I made sure to capture their exquisite beauty in photographs.

It’s truly awe-inspiring to realize that every single item, from the flakiest croissants to the most intricate tarts, is crafted by the students themselves. The level of professionalism and perfection displayed in their creations made me briefly entertain the thought of attending culinary school – that is, until I saw the tuition fees! Nevertheless, the experience offered a profound appreciation for the dedication and skill that goes into fine culinary arts.

Our giant brunch spread was a harmonious blend of sweet and savory, perfectly satisfying every craving. From rich quiches to decadent pastries, it was a feast for all the senses.

Watching the chefs in action, I couldn’t help but think how much I could learn from their expertise – perhaps even the elusive art of making perfect macarons!

After our delightful brunch, we couldn’t resist a visit to the CIA gift shop. Decked out in chef hats and brandishing kitchen tools, we fully embraced our roles as enthusiastic tourists, capturing some fun memories.

Delectable Eats and Iconic Views: Lola’s and the Walkway Over the Hudson

Despite our substantial brunch, our appetites were surprisingly ready for lunch! We headed to Lola’s, a local gem where I indulged in their legendary short rib grilled cheese. This sandwich was a revelation – rich, savory, and utterly satisfying. The photograph truly doesn’t capture the incredible depth of flavor and the perfect blend of tender short rib and gooey cheese. It was an unexpected highlight, especially after such a lavish morning meal.

Lola’s is conveniently located right beneath the Walkway Over the Hudson, a magnificent steel bridge that majestically spans the Hudson River, connecting Poughkeepsie and Highland. This presented the perfect opportunity to burn off some of those delicious calories! We embarked on a leisurely walk across the bridge, enjoying the stunning panoramic views. The day was ideally overcast, providing a comfortable temperature for our stroll. Had it been sunny, the lack of shade on the bridge would have made for a much hotter experience.

An Unforgettable Gastronomic Journey: Blue Hill at Stone Barns
After a day filled with incredible food and scenic walks, one might think we’d be full, but the evening held our most anticipated event: dinner at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. This was not just a meal; it was an extraordinary, multi-sensory culinary performance. Spread across approximately 25 inventive dishes and lasting a remarkable four and a half hours, it was an experience unlike any other. By the end, I was literally struggling to keep my eyes open, a testament to the sheer volume and richness of the courses. We all practically passed out on the drive home – a truly pathetic, yet hilarious, consequence of eating too much!

While internal photography wasn’t permitted, the memory of Blue Hill at Stone Barns remains vividly etched in my mind. It was truly an unforgettable food experience, embodying the pinnacle of the farm-to-table movement. If you’re an adventurous eater with a keen interest in sustainable cuisine, I wholeheartedly urge you to seek reservations. There were certainly dishes that initially sparked skepticism (rabbit heart, for example!), but to my surprise, they turned out to be some of my favorites. The creativity infused into each plate was astounding, transforming every bite into a delightful discovery. It was a truly awesome gastronomical journey that, in my opinion, surpasses even the celebrated Alinea.
A word of advice for future diners: drink plenty of coffee before your visit and try to eat very little throughout the day. Those 25+ dishes, while small bites, accumulate significantly over the hours, especially with the thoughtful pauses between courses allowing for digestion. Prepare for an epic culinary marathon!
Nature’s Embrace: Hiking and Exploring the Hudson Valley’s Outdoors

After the massive feast at Blue Hill, we wisely decided that the next day called for some active recovery. We headed out for what felt like a hike, though it was more of a delightful exploration of the Hudson River Valley’s natural wonders. Our first stop was Dover Stone Church, a remarkable natural cave formation. While we didn’t go full-on “spelunking” (just ventured in and out!), the experience was incredibly cool and beautiful. The surrounding streams and lush greenery created a serene and picturesque setting, a perfect antidote to our culinary excesses.

Following our visit to Dover Stone Church, we took a stroll along a segment of the legendary Appalachian Trail. We didn’t embark on a strenuous trek but rather enjoyed a leisurely walk around a fascinating swamp-like area. Here, we delighted in observing frogs, fish, and various other small critters hopping and swimming around. It sparked a hilarious debate among us about how much we’d have to be paid to jump into the murky waters – a lighthearted moment amidst the natural beauty.

More Local Flavors: Delis, Pastries, and Fine Dining in Rhinebeck
All that walking certainly worked up an appetite again! We pulled over at Cousins, a charming roadside deli that came highly recommended. With little fanfare, this place delivered insanely good deli sandwiches. As someone who can *never* pass up a Reuben, it was my immediate choice, and it proved to be nothing short of spectacular – perfectly stacked with tender corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on rye bread.

It was also on this trip that I finally got to try and correctly pronounce “sfogliatelle,” a glorious Italian pastry. With its numerous flaky, delicate layers resembling a shell, it’s typically filled with a rich, citrus-flavored ricotta and a hint of almond. Each bite was a delightful texture and flavor experience, a true discovery for my palate.

For dinner one evening, we ventured to Rhinebeck, a charming town known for its vibrant culinary scene, and dined at The Local Restaurant and Bar. The food here was excellent, offering a more contemporary American dining experience. I finally got to try broiled casino oysters, and they were absolutely superb – a perfect combination of briny oyster, crispy bacon, and savory seasonings.

When I spotted the beet appetizer on the menu, I knew I had to order it. The pairing with cambozola cheese – my absolute favorite! – was irresistible. The earthy sweetness of the beets complemented the creamy, pungent cheese beautifully, creating a memorable starter.

My friends ordered the duck ‘two-ways,’ and I must admit, I had serious entree envy! It looked absolutely divine. To cap off the night, we shared a Belgian chocolate ganache tartlet, a rich and decadent dessert that was the perfect sweet ending to a fantastic meal.

Lake Life and Sweet Farewells: Mahopac and Joe’s Dairy Bar

Our last day in the Hudson River Valley was dedicated to the serene beauty of Lake Mahopac, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The sun shone brightly, reflecting off the calm waters, creating an idyllic setting for boating and relaxation. It was a wonderful way to unwind and soak in the natural splendor of the region.

While on the lake, we spotted the fascinating Massaro House, a creation of the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Its distinctive design and stunning lakeside location were truly captivating, making me fantasize about renting it for a future getaway!

As we made our way home, a final sweet stop was essential. We pulled into Joe’s Dairy Bar, a local institution known for its fantastic ice cream. The line stretching down the sidewalk, filled with locals, was a clear indicator of its popularity and quality. The wait was absolutely worth it for the creamy, delicious treats that awaited us.

I chose coffee ice cream, a decision I both loved and regretted. While the flavor was incredibly rich and satisfying, it ultimately led to a night of tossing, turning, and very little sleep – a lesson learned about enjoying coffee-flavored treats too late in the day! Beneath it, the chocolate chip cookie dough was super yum and a perfect accompaniment.

Jason’s sundae was truly epic, a towering creation of various flavors and toppings that perfectly capped off our amazing trip.
Beyond the City: The Unexpected Charms of the Hudson River Valley
My journey through the Hudson River Valley was an absolute delight, profoundly changing my perception of New York. For so long, my thoughts of New York were confined to the bustling metropolis of NYC. This trip revealed a vibrant world of charming suburbs, quaint towns, and sprawling natural landscapes, offering an incredible array of activities and culinary experiences.
The Hudson River Valley has so much more to offer than I ever imagined, from world-class dining and historic culinary institutions to picturesque hikes and serene lake days. I cannot wait to return and further explore its hidden gems. Perhaps next time, we’ll even bring our little furry friend, Winston, to enjoy the vast open spaces and romp around in this beautiful part of New York!
