Having indulged in the Windy City’s renowned culinary scene, as detailed in our first Chicago series post on dining, it’s time to shift gears. This guide focuses on the perfect antidote to all that deliciousness: an array of active adventures and captivating sights designed to keep you moving and exploring Chicago. Get ready to balance those amazing meals with memorable experiences that showcase the city’s vibrant energy and stunning beauty.
The Bean (Cloud Gate) & Millennium Park Marvels
Cloud Gate, affectionately known as “The Bean,” is undeniably one of Chicago’s most iconic and intriguing attractions. While some locals might playfully question its immense popularity, this magnificent public sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor has captivated millions, making it an essential stop for any visitor. Its highly polished stainless steel surface reflects the city’s dynamic skyline and the ever-changing sky, creating a constantly evolving piece of art that invites interaction and unique photo opportunities.
Our journey to The Bean was a delightful walk from our hotel, offering a fantastic way to stretch our legs and soak in the urban atmosphere after hearty Chicago meals. Crossing the scenic Chicago River, we made our way to Millennium Park, a sprawling urban oasis that buzzed with activity. Tourists and locals alike were out, enjoying the fresh air, jogging, or simply admiring the park’s various art installations. Despite the looming storm clouds that hinted at impending rain, the energy was palpable. Having missed the opportunity to see The Bean on my previous visit to Chicago five years ago, I was determined to capture its reflective beauty and understand the global fascination firsthand. It truly is a marvel that transforms with every angle and reflection.
Millennium Park itself offers more than just The Bean. Take time to explore the Crown Fountain, an interactive art piece featuring two 50-foot glass block towers projecting facial images of Chicago citizens, spitting water at playful intervals. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion, an outdoor concert venue designed by Frank Gehry, boasts a dramatic stainless steel headdress and a sophisticated sound system. For a moment of tranquility, wander through the Lurie Garden, a lush perennial garden within the park, offering a peaceful escape with diverse plant life. These elements combined make Millennium Park a vibrant hub for art, nature, and active exploration in the heart of the city.

Navy Pier: Chicago’s Lakefront Playground
Venturing a bit further afield, we took an Uber to Navy Pier, an expansive entertainment and cultural destination stretching out into Lake Michigan. More than just a pier, it’s a bustling hub of activity offering breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline and the vast expanse of the lake. Our visit coincided with a glorious, sun-drenched day – our last in the city – and we seized the opportunity to enjoy the brilliant blue skies and refreshing lake breeze.
The centerpiece of Navy Pier is undoubtedly the iconic Centennial Wheel, a towering Ferris wheel that offers unparalleled panoramic views. Fun fact: the original Ferris wheel was indeed replaced, making way for this taller, more technologically advanced version, which stands as a testament to Navy Pier’s continuous evolution. Despite both Brandy and I having a slight aversion to heights, the allure of the views proved irresistible. As we ascended, there was a shared moment of exhilarating panic mixed with sheer delight, a truly memorable experience that ended with us laughing at our own trepidation and marveling at the cityscape below.
Beyond the Centennial Wheel, Navy Pier boasts a wealth of attractions. Families will love the Chicago Children’s Museum, while cultural enthusiasts can catch a performance at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. The pier also hosts a variety of shops, diverse dining options ranging from casual eateries to upscale restaurants, and beautifully landscaped public spaces perfect for a leisurely stroll. Throughout the summer, the pier becomes a prime spot for viewing spectacular fireworks displays over Lake Michigan, adding another layer of magic to the experience. Whether you’re looking for a thrilling ride, a cultural immersion, or simply a place to enjoy the lakefront beauty, Navy Pier offers an abundance of active engagement for every visitor.

The Chicago Riverwalk: An Urban Oasis
The Chicago Riverwalk is a magnificent urban pathway that transforms the riverfront into a vibrant public space, brimming with activities and offering unparalleled perspectives of the city’s world-renowned architecture. This beautifully designed pedestrian promenade traces the south bank of the Chicago River, providing a dynamic connection between the urban core and the natural flow of the water.
Our stroll along the Riverwalk was part of our journey to The Bean, revealing a city wrapped in a soft, bluish tint under a cloudy sky – a different, yet equally captivating, aesthetic. The Riverwalk is far more than just a path; it’s an experience in itself. Divided into distinct “rooms” or sections, each offering unique attractions, visitors can enjoy everything from al fresco dining at charming riverside cafes and bars to kayaking, fishing, and admiring various public art installations. It’s a fantastic spot to simply sit, relax, and watch the endless parade of boats, from sleek yachts to historic tour vessels, navigate the river.
Crucially, the Riverwalk serves as the primary boarding area for the famous architectural boat tours, which we’ll delve into more deeply below. From this vantage point, you gain an intimate view of the towering skyscrapers that line the river, each a testament to Chicago’s rich architectural history and innovative spirit. While some may find certain prominent buildings visually jarring, the overall effect of the diverse skyline, with its blend of historic masterpieces and modern marvels, is truly breathtaking. Exploring the Riverwalk is an active and immersive way to appreciate Chicago’s urban landscape, its history, and its vibrant contemporary culture.

Staying Fit On The Go: SoulCycle and Beyond
Maintaining an active lifestyle while traveling can sometimes be a challenge, but in a city as dynamic as Chicago, it’s an enjoyable part of the experience. After completing a 30-day paleo challenge, Gina and I were determined to keep up our fitness momentum. Our solution? Early morning sessions at SoulCycle in Old Town, a vibrant neighborhood known for its historic charm and lively atmosphere.
There’s something incredibly invigorating about starting your day with a high-energy workout, especially when you’re away from your usual routine. The rhythmic music, motivating instructors, and supportive community at SoulCycle provided the perfect setting to sweat it out and energize ourselves before diving into a day of sightseeing and exploration. It felt truly rewarding to prioritize our well-being amidst the excitement of travel, proving that fitness doesn’t have to take a backseat.
Adding to the morning’s perfection, we discovered that just two doors down from our first class was an Intelligentsia Coffee location, one of my absolute favorite coffee shops. As a self-proclaimed coffee snob, finding a perfectly brewed cold brew is truly a source of joy. These post-workout coffee rituals became a cherished part of our Chicago mornings, fueling us for the adventures ahead. This experience highlights a wonderful aspect of active travel: exploring neighborhoods like Old Town on foot, discovering local gems, and seamlessly integrating fitness and local culture into your itinerary. Look for local gyms, boutique fitness studios, or even guided running tours as a fun way to explore a new city while staying active.
Lincoln Park Zoo and the Surrounding Green Space
Following our visit to Navy Pier, a short Uber ride brought us to the picturesque Lincoln Park Zoo. What makes this zoo exceptionally appealing, beyond its beautiful setting, is that admission is absolutely free. This makes it an accessible and enjoyable attraction for everyone, allowing visitors to connect with wildlife without breaking the bank. The zoo is largely shaded, offering a pleasant respite from the sun, making it ideal for leisurely strolls as you observe a diverse array of animals from around the globe.
The Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the United States, established in 1868, and prides itself on its commitment to conservation, education, and animal welfare. While my personal feelings about animals in confinement can sometimes lead to emotional moments – I confess to shedding a tear when I saw the giraffes, touched by the expression in their eyes – the zoo strives to provide enriching habitats and actively participates in global conservation efforts for endangered species. Exhibits like the Regenstein African Journey, the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo, and the McCormick Bird House offer engaging experiences designed to educate visitors about wildlife and the importance of biodiversity.
Beyond the animal exhibits, the surrounding Lincoln Park itself is a magnificent green space, one of Chicago’s largest and most beloved parks. It stretches along the lakefront, offering expansive lawns perfect for relaxing, picnicking, or even some impromptu yoga sessions, as we did. Within the park, you can also explore the beautiful Lincoln Park Conservatory, a Victorian-era glass house filled with exotic plants, and enjoy the sandy shores of North Avenue Beach, which provides stunning views of the city skyline. A visit to the zoo can easily be combined with exploring these other wonderful attractions within Lincoln Park, making for a full day of active discovery and enjoyment.

The Unforgettable Chicago Architecture Cruise: A Must-Do!
If there is one experience you absolutely must prioritize during your visit to Chicago, it is undoubtedly an architecture cruise. The city’s architectural legacy is unparalleled, a dynamic canvas telling tales of innovation, resilience, and artistic vision born from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire. This guided boat tour along the Chicago River is not just a sightseeing trip; it’s a fascinating journey through history, engineering, and design, offering insights into each building and the pioneering minds behind them.
We opted for a nighttime cruise, and it exceeded all expectations. There’s an undeniable magic to seeing Chicago’s iconic skyscrapers illuminated against the dark sky, their intricate details highlighted by a symphony of lights. The city transforms into a dazzling spectacle, creating an ambiance that is both romantic and awe-inspiring. Learning about the different architectural styles – from Art Deco to International Style – and the stories behind groundbreaking structures like the Wrigley Building, Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), and Marina City, was incredibly enriching. I retained so much fascinating information, deepening my appreciation for the urban landscape.
An added bonus to our nighttime adventure was the spectacular fireworks display at the end of the cruise. Many tours time their schedules to coincide with the Navy Pier fireworks (seasonal, so check schedules!), offering a front-row seat to this dazzling aerial show from the unique vantage point of the river. The boat takes you down to the Navy Pier area to witness the fireworks before returning you to your boarding point on the Riverwalk.
While the nighttime cruise offered an unforgettable experience, I’m already planning a daytime tour for my next visit. I’m certain there were subtle architectural nuances and historical details that I might have missed in the twilight hours, and a daytime perspective would provide a fresh and equally captivating view of Chicago’s architectural grandeur. Whether day or night, an architecture cruise is a truly immersive and educational way to engage with the very heart and soul of Chicago, offering perspectives you simply can’t get from street level.
